Recorded live at London's Royal Albert Hall in 1995, this tenth anniversary performance of Claude-Michel Schonberg and Alain Boublil's landmark musical features a one-night-only "dream cast" of Les Mis veterans. Colm Wilkinson reprises his original role as Jean Valjean, the hero imprisoned 17 years for stealing a loaf of bread; Philip Quast is his relentless pursuer Javert. Other stars include Ruthie Henshall as Fantine, Judy Kuhn as Cosette, Michael Maguire as Enjolras, Alun Armstrong as Thenardier, and the inimitable Michael Ball returning to the role of Marius. ~ Sarah Welsh, Rovi
My favorite musical! I have the complete production CDs that we play all the time! Just a warning: this is not the stage production. This is the performers in costume, but just singing into microphones. I don't want anyone to be disappointed. You must see it LIVE to get the full effect!
Watched it three times and spent hours during following days singing the songs as I went about my business. An incredible production. Vocals with full orchestra, great costumes, a chorus of a hundred at least and a riveting light show. If you love music this is special.
they could have not picked a more amazing cast and pulled it off any better than they did on this one. even if you are not a les miz fan, this performance stands above the rest. colm wilkinson is, and always will be, the most perfect Valjean there is, Michael Ball is unbeatable Marius (I have yet to hear anyone half as good as this man, play this part!) who sends shivers up your spine as he sings, Lea Salonga is wonderful as always as Eponine, and i could keep going lol.. they didnt call this team the *Dream Cast* for nothing. i could watch/listen to this 24/7.. 5 stars all the way!
The show's cast consisted of "the best of the best" performers ever to grace London and Broadway theatre.
Favorites:
Colm Wilkinson (Jean Valjean) - original Jean Valjean from London and Broadway... awesome haunting voice!
Lea Salonga (Eponine) - Original Miss Saigon?? Amazing rendition of "On My Own"; very impressed to know she's a Filipina portraying a character meant for a caucasian; crystal clear -wide range of voice
Michael Ball (Marius)- Original actor to play to role! I've been in the US most of my life but I never heard of him until I saw this concert; phenomenal great performer! well known in the london and broadway stage; awesome voice and acting- highlight "A Little Fall of Rain" with Lea Salonga
This is a collector's item...I'm sure you'll love it enough to buy it after renting ;-)
I've seen this film on PBS and it's wonderful. Unfortunately, Blockbuster's copy was so scratched it often skipped and froze. And it wasn't in widescreen, only full screen. I wish I could have watched it uninterrupted on DVD but B'buster's quality control isn't working very well.
