Helter Skelter (1976) Reviews

Helter Skelter (1976)
Member Rating:
Based on the best-selling Vincent Bugliosi book of the same name, Helter Skelter is a made-for-TV account of the investigation and prosecution of Charles Manson (Steve Railsback), who was convicted of leading a group of followers (known as "The Family") to murder seven people in California, including actress Sharon Tate. The film takes a Law & Order-like approach, starting with the discovery of the murders, which leads to the police gathering snippets of evidence that they eventually connect to the bigger picture. The second half of the movie concentrates on how District Attorney Bugliosi (George DiCenzo) attains a conviction despite the enormous amount of press coverage the case received. Nancy Wolfe, Christina Hart, and Cathey Paine portray the three loyal Manson Family members who were the co-defendants at his trial. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

This old made-for-TV film does a good job of including the important details of the Manson murders and the case. Steve Railsback makes a very good Manson. The film goes for realism, which is a thoroughly satisfying approach. Include a few Manson songs for the win.

Not sure what the previous reviewer was watching. First of all the film is in color, not B/W as mentioned above. I recommend this to all fans of true crime stories.

yes this film was made for Tv in the late 1970s but does an excellent job of presenting the facts and investigational blunders and breakthroughs that finally lead to Charles Manson and his groupies being convicted of the brutal murders of Sharon Tate and her friends and the La Bianca's. The story line is excellent and factual. Great movie for those who are true crime buffs.

I watched this movie when it first aired in 1976 and found Steve Railsback's chilling portrayal of Manson to be the highlight. Also, having been around when these murders occured and wondering why the trial took two years from the time arrests were made to get convictions, the movie showed the problems involved. Police cooperation from jurisdiction to jurisdiction was changed nationwide due to the problems caused by the cops lack of "sharing" information and evidence.

Steve Railsback IS Charles Manson in this movie! A BRILLIANT performance by him! Very true to the book! The acting is superb by all! You actually live this case while watching this movie!

While it looks a bit dated, with that 1970's visual style-it still packs a punch. Some of the acting is on par with a Dragnet episode, but some of the actors are outstanding. The book is a masterpiece. I think reviewer 'Jennifer B'. is talking about the awful filck "The Helter Skelter Murders"--a different movie, and a total turd.
