Charles Purpura scribed this semi-autobiographical tale about his experiences in a Brooklyn Catholic school of 1965. The film focuses on several Catholic school boys who get into ever increasing amounts of trouble with the presiding priests of the Catholic school, St. Basil's. Andrew McCarthy plays Michael Dunn, a newly arrived student who latches onto the class egghead Caesar (Malcolm Danare), who is constantly picked on by the class bully Rooney (Kevin Dillon). Rooney intimidates Michael and Caesar to become his erstwhile chums and, along with a few other quiet students, they receive corporal punishment for minor infractions, disrupting communion and confession and, ultimately, their antics inspire changes in the strict school hierarchy. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

We saw this movie years ago and rented it again for our young adult kids to see it. They enjoyed it as much as we did. It's a fun and sensitive movie all in one...kind of like rooting for the underdog. Highly recommended!!!

Who says growing up Catholic can't be fun? This movie is hilarious.

This movie was hiliariously funny. It revealed some of the truths of the old time catholic school while adding humor with the boys getting in trouble. Anyone from that day and time knows that the boys would have never been allowed to do the things that they did without being expelled the first time.

I am a grandma who grew up in the 60s. I was looking for a movie to watch with my two grandsons, 11 and 8, about that era. Lo and behold I came across this absolutely "organic" movie about teen age boys, bullying, creating friendships, love, loyalty, loss and the awkwardness and delight in falling in love for the first time! You will not be dissappointed.. however I did not show my grandsons becasue they are being raised catholic and well...you'll see.

A moving drama with a good balance between humour and emotion. The acting is top quality. The only thing that lets this dvd down is the lack of special features.

A wildly exaggerated look at 1960's Catholic School with an emphasis on the liberal use of corporal punishment; some true, some ridiculous. A movie that can't decide whether it wants to be funny or make a statement. The ending wrap-up narration is ridiculous, and not to be believed.

They sure use the Lord's name in vain alot for being in a Catholic setting, which I don't appreciate in a movie or life itself, being a Christian. Getting past that, the story was not bad.
