Wealthy metallurgist Harry Mitchell (Roy Scheider) lives to regret his extramarital affair with pretty young Cini (Kelly Preston). A trio of vicious blackmailers (John Glover, Robert Trebor, Clarence Williams III) show Mitchell a videotape of his most recent roll in the sack with Cini. They demand a huge amount of hush money, but Mitchell calls their bluff, going so far as to tell his politicially ambitious wife Barbara (Ann-Margret) about the affair. But the extortionists haven't even gotten started yet. Tying Mitchell to a chair, they force him to watch a tape of Cini being horribly murdered-with the evidence arranged so that Mitchell will be accused of the crime. But Mitchell remains firm in his refusal to pay up, whereupon he mounts a "fight fire with fire" plan all his own. 52 Pick Up was based on a novel by Elmore Leonard, which was previously filmed in 1984 as The Ambassador. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I liked this movie 20 years ago, and I wanted to see it again to see if I still did. I did. It is definitely "R" rated -- lots of nudity and very violent. The bad guy makes porn flicks and is generally a sicko that you love to hate. However, aside from that, I like Roy Scheider and Ann-Margret, and it keeps you guessing right up to the very end. You might think you know what's going to happen next but it fools you a few times.

There have been many adaptations of Elmore Leonard's stories to film, some good (Get Shorty; Hombre) and some bad (Be Cool;Stick)--this John Frankenheimer directed film belongs in the former. The late Roy Scheider is well cast as an ex-military officier who's blackmailed by 3 vicious thugs, chief among them being John Glover and Clarence Williams II as sleazy as they come. Ann-Margaret is also excellent here as Scheider's politician-wife but it's the manuevering of Scheider against these thugs that will keep you riveted. Recommended for Leonard enthusiasts and film noirists.

I enjoyed this movie fairly well. It was a little predictable, but the end really packs a punch. If I were to criticize it, it would be that the story was not really that believable. The main character really did some deep detective work to find people which most would not be capable of, but, all in all, it was an entertaining flick. Recommend with some reservations.

This movie was great full of action, classy and raunchy at the same time..its keep you on your toes throught the whole movie, great actors. Great plot, never boring, a bit violent, not by todays standard. I saw it 20 years ago ,rented it for wife to see, she liked it, great writer and author.

A near masterpiece that satisfies the deserved revenge factor. This is actually a case of missed acadamy awards for both Roy Schieder and John Glover with Ann Margaret up for supporting actress. Everything that captures the decadent street sleaze of the 80s is duplicated with precision. A multitude of supporting actors play their roles with such conviction it's hard to believe this movie has been overlooked by so many including the prestigious acadamy. Love, lust, betrayal, forgivness and good old revenge are in rare form here. Its a rough movie though. Put the kiddies away and don't miss it.
