This family classic is adapted from the Broadway musical, which was based on the comic strip Little Orphan Annie. During the Great Depression in New York City, a plucky red-haired scrapper named Annie (Aileen Quinn) is the voice of hope for her fellow orphans who live under the supervision of drunken floozy Miss Hannigan (Carol Burnett). Annie's spirit is fueled by the belief that her real parents dropped her off at the orphanage with a half of a locket, promising to return for her with the other half. One day, the dingy orphanage is visited by the sophisticated Grace Farrell (Ann Reinking), personal secretary to conservative politician Oliver Warbucks (Albert Finney). In order to improve his image, Grace brings Annie to the Warbucks estate for a weeklong visit. Annie quickly wins the hearts of servants and politicians alike, eventually even bringing her song of hope, "Tomorrow," to President Roosevelt in Washington. Warbucks and Grace even go so far as to perform a public search for Annie's parents, creating an opportunity for Miss Hannigan, Rooster (Tim Curry), and Lily (Bernadette Peters) to scam their way to the reward money. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi

This is a wonderful family musical. We rented the Special Anniversary Edition. My six year old son loved it and says he can't get the songs out of his head. He wants to watch it again and again and asked me to buy the CD. Carol Burnett and Albert Finney are outstanding. The special features at the end of the film are well worth watching, especially the interview with Aileen Quinn. I highly recommend the movie.

This is such a great family musical with great musical numbers and wholesome plot. My only gripe is that the movie should really have been released in widescreen format, the cropping done to present in full screen format is quite obvious in some scenes.

The disc gets a low rating because this so-called "Special Anniversary Edition" DVD is only available in Full Screen, and the film was actually produced in a wider aspect ratio. Why do studios continue this, or are they now treating DVD like an obsolete format in order to sell HD-DVD and Blu-Ray?

A timeless classic. My children sat spellbound to all the plots and they cheered for Annie and the children. I remember doing the same as a child when it was first released.

Although I love this movie I rented it for my 4 year old twins and although they were glued to the screen they said that they didn't like it. I think it might have been a little scary and hard to follow for their age group.
