Though the anti-war sentiments of Hamburger Hill come through loud and clear, the film is squarely on the side of those courageous, much-maligned Americans who fought and died in Vietnam. Based on a true incident, the story takes place in 1969, as the 101st Airborne Division confronts the Vietcong in a bloody battle over Hill 937 (aka "Hamburger Hill") in the A Shau Valley. During the next ten days, both sides incur heavy losses, but the Cong refuse to surrender the hill. The ultimate American "victory" turns out to be a hollow one indeed. Scripted by Vietnam War vet Jim Carabatsos, Hamburger Hill not only underlines the futility of the war but also the pressures brought to bear upon the troops by an insensitive, often hostile media. By utilizing a cast of unknowns, director John Irvin deftly avoids the Hollywoodized slickness of such bigger-budgeted efforts as Apocalypse Now and The Deer Hunter. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
A fairly good movie for the Vietnam War buff, worth the time to watch it. As a Vietnam veteran who volunteered for 2 consecutive tours, I can attest to the accuracy of the action AND the politics of the war. The movie itself wandered a lot, but kept my attention.
Ultra-realistic action film is a mixed bag of annoying, cliched characters mixed with refreshing ones, (especially "Doc") of good dialogue mixed with hokey moments. The real star is the battle itself. Like the superior "Pork Chop Hill" ,set in the Korean War, the bulk of this well staged descent into hell is the grueling ,costly trek up this scorched ,pock marked hill ,battling remnants of tough North Vietnamese , still full of fight. Notable for it's positive portrayal of "Bloods" ,(African American soldiers) often short-changed in other 'Nam flicks, and it's anti war but very pro soldier attitude.
I saw this movie as a kid and loved it; probably the first old war movie I ever saw and started me on them, then came platoon. Definately a need to see.
I rented this movie to watch and be able to say I saw it, however, after reading the menber reviews for the first time, I didn't even bother watching it and just returned it!
