The Green Berets is an exciting war film that was lambasted by critics who at the time of its release opposed the war in Vietnam. Wayne's role is similar to his part in The Longest Day (1963), but it was evident to the worldwide public that the same bravado that flew well in World War II crash-landed in 1968 in the wake of a very different war and political time. Wayne plays the hard-nosed rough-and-ready Colonel Mike Kirby who heads a courageous bunch of tough-as-nails Green Berets determined to capture an important enemy general. They are accompanied by a skeptical reporter who soon becomes a gung-ho red-white-and-blue patriot as the Colonel and the others lecture and show him why they must defeat the "commies." Interestingly, despite the massive anti-war sentiments of the times, the film grossed over $11 million at the box-office and is especially notable for the fine battle scenes. The film also features the hit song "Ballad of the Green Berets," sung by Sgt. Barry Sadler. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi

Despite the fact that the movie was obviously filmed in the SE United States (note the pine forests), and that the film is hitorically inaccutate, it is still fun to watch for it's pro-Vietnam war pitch.

it reminds us of all we owe to those who fought in Vietnam.

Would rate this a 5 Star. John Wayne has been a favorite of mine for over 50 years. To me all of his movies are good, some great and some excellent. I feel so proud of our troops and this movie does the Green Berets proud.

Wayne was definitely trying to fit his successful WWII war movie into a Vietnam setting. Unfortunately, even for today's audiences, it doesn't translate very well. The cinematography is also substandard as most of the night scenes are so dark, the viewer has no idea what's going on for long periods of time. Worth watching for Wayne fans

The movie was fine but it didn't tell me I had to flip the disc over to see the second half of the movie. It simple showed a blank TV screen a little over half way throught the movie. I requested a new disc which did the same thing. Only then did I just by luck flip the disc over and was able to see the remainder of the movie.

Compared to more recent war movies this film is showing it's age. It's rated G after all. It still has a nice mix of lighter moments and some great battle scenes. Even witha G rating it shows war is hell. An entertaining movie without being too graphic for the younger set.

The perfect "beer and pretzels" flick. So lame--it's actually good. Have the gang over and marvel at the Duke actually making the nightmare of the 'Nam look fun. Suckly special effects (an HO scale model chopper crash ,an observation tower full of mannequins collapses in fast motion, Viet Cong extras standing stock still waitin' for "Puff the magic dragon" to shoot 'em full of holes.) Man, ya gotta love such crapulence!

John Wayne plays himself (when did he ever really act?) in this pro war anti-commie propaganda film. If you like the fact that we killed 3 million Vietnamese you will probably love this film. The cinematography was great, that's why I gave it 1 star.
