In the John Hughes-scripted The Great Outdoors, John Candy stars as Chet Ripley, an oafish paterfamilias who takes his family on a vacation at a lakeside resort. Their enjoyment is seriously compromised when brother-in-law Roman Craig (Dan Aykroyd) shows up with his wife and kiddies. The rest of the film is an ongoing war between Ripley's carefree aggregation and Craig's obnoxiously prissy brood, and making things worse, a driving rainstorm forces both families to remain under one roof well-past their threshold of patience. Annette Bening makes her film debut as Aykroyd's ill-tempered wife. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
When I was a kid I watched this with my dad mom and brothers. It's one of the few times that stand out because we were all rolling on the floor laughing at this movie.
If you like Dan Aykroyd as the slick and crass but good-natured guy he plays, and John Candy as the loveable dolt, you'll like this movie. Silly moments and mindless fun.
I didn't realize how CRUDE and RAUNCHY this movie was. We had to stop watching partway. This is NOT A FAMILY MOVIE. It's also NOT PG. I'm embarrassed to have selected this movie.
Actually, more crude than I remember. I must have been less sensitive when I was younger. I guess having kids watching changes your perspective on "acceptable" movies. Good humor (John Candy is great), but somewhat innapropriate for little kids. Typical 80's style humor with some vulgarity and adult themes. In my opinion, closer to "PG-13" than "PG".
