In this supernatural thriller, a woman believes that a visitor from another dimension is trying to guide her into a sinister mystery. Feeling lonely after her daughter leaves home for college, Claire (Michelle Pfeiffer) begins to sense that something is wrong in her house, and feels a spirit is trying to contact her. At first her husband Norman (Harrison Ford), a scientist doing research in genetics, attributes her paranormal beliefs to stress or possibly a nervous breakdown, and sends her to a psychiatrist (Joe Morton) who puts no more stock in Claire's stories than does Norman. While Claire's contention that someone or something sinister is afoot leads her down a number of blind alleys, in time she becomes convinced that the mysterious happenings at her home are somehow connected to the disappearance of a woman who was a student at the nearby college -- and bore a striking resemblance to Claire. What Lies Beneath marked the debut of screenwriter Clark Gregg, whose script is based on a story by himself and Sarah Kernochan; the supporting cast includes Diana Scarwid as Claire's best friend Jody, and James Remar and Miranda Otto as a contentious couple living next door. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
I was so scared watching this movie in the theater and then I rented it 6 months later when it came and I was still jumping in my seat. No matter how many times you see it, it will always keep you jumping. GREAT THRILLER!! Hasn't been one like it since.
This was a good strong film, showing you the isolation experienced by a woman caught in the midst of a supernatural experience. It's part mystery, part drama and part horror, but all good. The performances were excellent, and the story itself takes you through some twists and turns that you don't expect. The tone and pace were just right for the content.
I wasn't expecting much from this because it seemed to be in the theaters for a very short time and was never really spoken about. I have to say it's pretty good. Good old fashioned haunted house-type scares. It's a bonus to have two great actors like Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer perform in this suspenseful thriller. I highly recommend this to all just not horror fans.
great movie-- the ending is amaaazing! i love movies with a surprise ending and i never saw this one coming! i know some mysterys are too slow and not suspensful and some suspense stories have no mystery or real plot but this is exactly in the middle- the best of BOTH worlds. You cant pass this one up-- Rent it!
OK Anyone who thinks this movie was Scary hasn't seen a Scary Movie Yet. First of All This movie is Rated PG-13 its not even a R Rated Movie. Yeah there is some Suspense in the Movie but not enough to make me Jump or my girlfriend to cover her eyes. This movie and The Grudge are both B FLICKS!
However Harrison Ford could play a good role as a crazy guy. Throughout the movie its SLOW DRAMA and it doesn't really get all that good until the very end of the movie.
If you really want to see a good Suspense Movie but its a Older Movie rent "The People Under The Stairs" this was a pretty good movie with young VING RHAMES
Turn out all the lights in the house at Especially LATE Nigh and watch the movie "Dead Silence"
What Lies Beneath was Lame and Boring! Where was the scary scenes i waited till the end of the movie for suspense.
This movie is an awesome film to watch on your first time. I will always remember this film for being the movie that taught me that not having a soundtrack and relying on ambient sound is ultra scary. It doesn't use much visual effects, but the moments that do deliver the fear well. Harrison Ford is great, and Pfeiffer is just as beautiful as ever. I hope Zemeckis comes back to doing a horror genre film again soon.
Wow...I was so hype to see this movie, and now i'm left kind of disappointed. It was soooo drawn out in parts in the beginning and especially the end! Damn!...they could have got to the main points soooo much quicker. Really wasn't all that i expected.
I'm sorry, but I am not a big fan of Michelle Pfeiffer. I don't think she can act very well. The plot was slow, Harrison Ford was good, but he is much better as Indiana Jones or that ilk! The movie seemed dated.
