Based on the novel by Hubert Selby Jr., this gritty drama concerns four people trapped by their addictions. Harry (Jared Leto), and his best friend Tyrone (Marlon Wayans) are impoverished heroin addicts living in Coney Island, NY, while Harry's girlfriend Marion (Jennifer Connelly) is a fellow addict trying to distance herself from her wealthy father. Harry dreams of scoring a pound of smack, from which he could make enough money to open a clothing boutique with Marion, but so far he and his friends can barely scrape by supporting their own habits. Meanwhile, Harry's mother Sara (Ellen Burstyn), who spends her days watching television, is told she has the opportunity to appear on her favorite game show; wanting to lose enough weight to fit into her favorite red dress, she visits a sleazy doctor who gives her a prescription for amphetamines. Soon Sara has a drug habit of her own that is spiraling out of control. Requiem for a Dream was directed by Darren Aronofsky, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Selby; it was Aronofsky's second feature, following his acclaimed independent film Pi. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This is a brutal, but compelling film that follows four people as their drug addictions slowly and inexorably take them into their private hells. The acting and cinematography are fantastic. Hard to watch and hard to forget.

Absolutely amazing movie. Definitely not something for those that are sensitive to graphic movies. Aronofsky depicts the struggle with addiction from an addict's point of view, rather than that of an outsider looking in. This is a real-life, non stylized movie about addiction with a real-life "not all endings are happy" finish. I admire Aronofsky's ability to make his movies stunning visually without having to use a computer. Real talent.

Seriously disturbing, but a good watch.

One of the most disturbing movies. I never wanted to ever take drugs. Now I really don't even want to be in a relationship with someone who takes drugs. This is horribly grafic and pain-filled to the end. Depressing.

Forget all those PSAs, this is like the Red Asphalt for drugs. Scare you straight.

Artistically great. There were scenes I had to close my eyes. Very disturbing. It took me a couple hours to shake it off.

This movie is very disturbing as others said. I started the film, wondering when it would begin. It was very slow, feeling time consuming at some point. At the end of the day it's mainly about drugs and the effect it has on people. It was okay to watch if you are bored, however in my opinion it's only rental material, it has no playback value.

This movie reminded me of the high school presentations where we were told that pre-marital you-know-what would result in AIDS and death. People like this movie because it's intense and artsy and they wish they were intense and artsy too. It was lame, but you should probably watch it just so you can bond with the other "artsy" people who like this movie. Although I must admit, Ellen Burstyn was incredible to watch.

Kind of reminded me of Drugstore Cowboy with better filming/style, but the story wasn't as compelling. The acting was OK, but the story just didn't hold together as well as it should have.
