Pregnant 17-year-old Novalee Nation (Natalie Portman) runs away from her Tennessee home toward the bright lights of California, accompanied by her boyfriend, Willy Jack Pickens (Dylan Bruno). But Willy gets cold feet and abandons her at a Walmart in Sequoyah, OK. Novalee's life savings amount to $5.55, so she moves into the Walmart, sleeping there at night and venturing out during the day. With the help of the eccentric Sister Husband (Stockard Channing), and Lexie Coop (Ashley Judd), a nurses' aide, Novalee tries to get her life in order for the sake of her expected child, Americus Nation. Based on a novel by Billie Letts, Where the Heart Is also features Keith David, Joan Cusack, Richard Nance, and Heather Kafka. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Must see movie. If you had ever had a hard life, after seeing this movie you'd feel differently after seeing this movie. Natalie Portman one of my favorite actresses after seeing this and the professional. This a very heartbreaking but heart warming at the same time.

What a whaky wonderful movie. It was put together in such a way you felt every emotion she was going through...and I loved all of it. A truly good movie.

This was a warm and touching movie, despite the heartaches and bumps endured. It is worth seeing more than once.

overall an ok movie. Portman is good as always and a good story. unfortunately nobody else is very good in the movie, no character development and you know everything that is going to happen in the first 20 mins.

Many think this movie to be sweet. But I was so disappointed. The story is about Novalee & Willie Jack. They head West together, until WJ abandons her at a WalMart. They part ways on more than one level - his life goes as low as it can, and her life rises beautifully. It's a study in contrasts, done impeccably in the novel, with complex characters to richen the journey - but it didn't translate. Hollywood cut Benny completely out and shaved Moses down to a bit part while making Novalee's one-visit-mother a major player. They DESTROYED Forney - an eccentric, withdrawn, late-30s genius - turning him into a 20-something easy-going stud with a crooked smile. And Lexie - she's supposed to be a white-trashy size 22 w/4 kids, and they put ASHLEY JUDD in the role. Hello! Does that picture at the top look like a sz 22 w/4 kids and white trash tendencies to you? Read the book. You'll be amazed at how inept Hollywood was at telling this story.

I did not like this movie at all. I thought it to be a complete waste of time. To many things happened to people that were never explained or tied up. The ending was totally predictable, except the ex-boyfriend part. The way she treated the ex-boyfriend when she saw him again was very unrealistic. There were no morals supported by any of the characters.
