The Golden Seal (1983) Reviews

The Golden Seal (1983)
Member Rating:
The Golden Seal manages to be excellent family entertainment without ever resorting to gimmickry or phony sentimentality. The story focuses on a family living in the Aleutian Islands. The father, Jim Lee (Steve Railsback), has long been awaiting the return of the fabled golden seal, which comes to the islands to give birth every seven years. Like many of the other locals, Jim intends to capture the seal and turn it in for a huge reward. But Jim's 10-year-old son Eric (Torquil Campbell) endeavors to save the golden seal from harm. Told in a leisurely, unforced fashion, The Golden Seal is a fairly faithful adaptation of A River Ran Out of Eden, a novel by James Vance Marshall. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The sleeve on this says, "manages to be excellent family entertainment..." NOT! There are several curse words, lots of fighting, and at one point a character says, "I won't rape your sister." Lovely. Fortunately, my kids left the room disgusted. Total waste of time.

I really didn't like this movie. It was very slow paced and also used a lot of bad language, even the kid uses the bad language quite a few times. Not really for children, as I expected it to be.

Really bad - waste of time - full of unneeded curse words and just really terrible acting.

We ended up stopping this movie mid-stream for several reasons. The 10-year-old boy (Eric) justified his use of cussing stating if you cuss, it will take away the pain (he hit his finger with a hammer) and it teaches my kids that cussing is acceptable. Another reason was a line used by one of the bad-boy type characters "Well, I'm not here raping your daughter" which was uncalled for in the context of the film. This same bad boy character portrayed he was going to rape or attack the mother, which gave all of us a creepy and uneasy feeling. Becaused we turned off the movie, I am not sure how this actually progressed in the film. The film was also VERY predictable in almost every other area and was a bit cheesy. While my kids were upset when we turned it off, I do not feel we missed any Oscar winning scenes.

This movie was not only cheesy, but actually had bad language as well!

This is only a family film if your family readily allows children to hear and say most of the "bad" curse words. I didn't read the reviews before renting this one. Well, I learned a lesson: PG doesn't mean a thing if the movie was made before 1999! The PG rating is not warranted to today's movie rating standards. My 11 year old son had never heard or seen the words used before. (We like to watch with cc displayed.) The only thing I could do was apologize to him, and that is what I expect from Blockbuster for its misleading summary!

A bit disjointed. Characters are not developed. Movie did not keep me entertained.

Great movie about what is important in life BUT that is all. Too many bad words and more sexual innuendos than I prefer in some adult movies<. So sad that what should be "family" movies are being reduced to "trashy" movies.

An Adoreable Old Movie. A Great Family Movie. Shows a a family who live a rather simple but isolated life on the Aleutian Islands. Good decisions and good values triumph through the purity and values of a little boy. The premise is the long awaited return of a golden seal whose pelt is worth a huge sum $10,000. To the struggling dad who ekes out a living catching and selling fish he almost compromises his values but is reminded by his son, who is very principled because of what his dad has taught him but his dad had to be reminded when he saw dollar signs. It's is a very touching movie that pulls at the heart strings. So worth your time.
