Metallica: S&M (1999)
Member Rating:
Thrash metal pioneers Metallica are one band who've never been afraid of a challenge, but in 1998 they tried an experiment that surprised both fans and casual observers -- they performed a special concert with the San Francisco Symphony, in which the group and conductor/arranger Michael Kamen brought together the group's raw guitar firepower with the dynamic range of a full orchestra. A camera crew was on hand to record the event, and Metallica: S&M captures the full 150-minute concert in its entirety. The band performs two new songs, Human and No Leaf Clover, as well as eighteen classics from their back catalog, including Enter Sandman, The Call Of Ktulu, Master Of Puppets, The Thing That Should No Be, Sad But True, and Until It Sleeps. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This is a must have for any die hard Metallica fan. I am very content listening to the audio version in my car. By that I mean the music is awesome. I think Metallica delivers on the combining of it's heavy metal favorites and the symphony orchestra. Another thing I liked was seeing Jason Newsted on base before his departure from the band. The problem lies in the camera angles, the lighting, and the stage set up. The band members are scattered throughout the stage and don't play together making for a big mess of bad camera angles. Also, the orchestra and the band are on the same level. it would have been better if the orchestra was raised up higher and the band played in the same area. It would have looked a lot better on film and would have made the whole experience a lot more enjoyable. If you're curious be sure to watch it.

UNBELIEVABLE!! I listened to the CD for about 5 years before watching the DVD and now I don't know if I can just listen to the CD anymore. The experience of watching Metallica with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra together is truly amazing!

even though im not a Trash Metal fan, this was a great introduction to this type of music and to Metallica, the band still keeps its over the top style while the San Francisco symphony notes are are over laid with the bands type of music. I thought it was worth hearing and seeing and made me a fan of Metallica.
