Lawrence Kasdan wrote and directed this comedy about a young psychologist named Mumford (Loren Dean), who arrives in a small town and sets up a practice. Mumford's style is short on analytic mumbo-jumbo and long on practical advice, and he soon finds that he has a long list of satisfied clients in his new home town, including many of the city's most prominent citizens. Mumford's advice also helps love bloom among the city's single residents. However, the city already had a psychologist, Ernest Delbanco (David Paymer), who is quickly losing business to Mumford. So Ernest starts asking questions: who is this Mumford, and just what are his qualifications? Mumford's supporting cast includes Ted Danson, Martin Short, Alfre Woodard, Hope Davis, Jason Lee, and Pruitt Taylor Vince. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A best-ever movie! Jane Adams is the highly skeptical shrink, not David Paymer. Sure, it's a fantasy with unlikely real-life situations, but what a beautiful and fun story of "hope springs eternal"!

Great story line. I liked everything but the nudity. There was way too much of it. Everything else was terrific and I loved the ending.

Another score in my book by writer and director Lawrence Kasdan. Just as I enjoyed Grand Canyon and Big Chill - I enjoyed this film and the way the writer weaves the lives of many characters into one great mosiac - with a message for everyone. Wonderful performances by all. Jason Ritter is wonderful as the young man in this film and Ted Danson plays a small role - but much better than many larger roles he has played recently. Loren Dean puts me in mind of a young James Stewart in the way he moves with his character of Mumford. This is a most enjoyable movie. I'm saddened to see it's R rating - it's so not warranted.

A great movie to watch. It was interesting to see how the "doctor's" ability to listen solved so many patients' psychological problems. A very nice ending too.

Cute story about a young drifter who happens upon a small town, and then masquerades as a family psychologist, listening to the assorted problems of the local townsfolk which in turn helps them to sort out their own issues. When he invariably unmasked as a fraud, the same people he helped come to his aid. Good story, worth seeing.

This movie was a very pleasant surprise. Loren Dean plays an unassuming counselor whe has a great ability to disarm the local people sent his way. I really enjoyed yhis movie. Check it out. John L.

I liked this movie and didn't regret watching it. Enjoyable without silliness or too many f bombs.

Irritating from the start. The continuous breach in patient confidentiality was handeled as if it occurs as a normal part of mental health treatmen (adding just more to the stigma); and the main character "dufous" presentation just added to my dislike of this movie.
