Noted theater director Sam Mendes, who was responsible for the acclaimed 1998 revival of Cabaret and Nicole Kidman's turn in The Blue Room, made his motion picture debut with this film about the dark side of an American family, and about the nature and price of beauty in a culture obsessed with outward appearances. Kevin Spacey plays Lester Burnham, a man in his mid-40s going through an intense midlife crisis; he's grown cynical and is convinced that he has no reason to go on. Lester's relationship with his wife Carolyn (Annette Bening) is not a warm one; while on the surface Carolyn strives to present the image that she's in full control of her life, inside she feels empty and desperate. Their teenage daughter Jane (Thora Birch) is constantly depressed, lacking in self-esteem, and convinced that she's unattractive. Her problems aren't helped by her best friend Angela (Mena Suvari), an aspiring model who is quite beautiful and believes that that alone makes her a worthwhile person. Jane isn't the only one who has noticed that Angela is attractive: Lester has fallen into uncontrollable lust for her, and she becomes part of his drastic plan to change his body and change his life. Meanwhile, next door, Colonel Fitts (Chris Cooper) has spent a lifetime in the Marine Corps and can understand and tolerate no other way of life, which makes life difficult for his son Ricky (Wes Bentley), an aspiring filmmaker and part-time drug dealer who is obsessed with beauty, wherever and whatever it may be. American Beauty was also the screen debut for screenwriter Alan Ball. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

I thought there were parts of this movie that were really funny and others that made me think about my life so far and where I really was so far. It had some very dark parts that I really didn't want to watch and some others that were really uncomfortable to think about. But overall this was a good movie and I would recommend this to others to watch.

The sad plight of desperate people living numb lives without introspection or courage. The hollow conversations, empty relationships and selfish ambitions bring these family members and friends to a sad conclusion. If only they could have communicated their feelings openly. Live your life openly, love those close to you with open communcation and understanding. Although a little depressing, this movie will make you want to hug your loved ones. A cautionary tale for all. Brilliant art fare!

Spot Light to a S**T movie. Wanna know why I rated it 5 full stars? It's true to LIFE! Worse, it's true to a REPETITIVE life, FILLED with the F****D up choices associated with such a life. This movie shows that each of us has a glorious life if we choose to opt for it. It also shows that MOST of us pathetic folk choose the EASIEST, and MOST of the time LEAST satisfying. To say the least, this was educational. The husband and wife had NUMEROUS occasions to solve their marital issues, ALL clues of which BOTH parties chose to ignore. BOTH chose rather to choose extra-marital solutions to their frustrations rather than the more difficult but more rewarding path toward rebuilding their love and marriage. Now, who is to blame? Without sufficient info gained from the movie, I blame them BOTH. NEITHER chose to satisfy the MARRIAGE, who was the most important person in the relationship. A marriage is THE most important "person" in a relationship. Most folk don't understand this.

Has its moments, but definitely not a best picture winner.

Unusual movie showing the quirks of families in a suburban setting. The acting of Kevin Spacey, Annete Bening and Thora Birch as a dysfunctional family made it interesting.

Not worth watching, Pretty good acting, but also pretty pathetic story. I hope there aren't too many people in real life as the ones portrayed in this movie.

While watching it I remembered seeing it back then. I'm sure stuff like this goes on. It's not really a good movie but it could show some that their lives arn't the only ones messed up.

I did't care for this movie. I found the storyline to be mostly dark and depressing. The acting was credible by all, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
