The lightly mocking title Get Out Your Handkerchiefs (Préparez Vos Mouchoirs) sets the tone for this Bertrand Blier-directed amalgam of the sentimental and sardonic. Gérard Depardieu plays an at-wit's-end husband, Raoul, who'll go to any lengths to sexually satisfy his wife, Solange (Carole Laure). Raoul decides that the best thing to cure Solange's boredom would be if she took a lover; thus, he chooses Stéphane (Patrick Dewaere) for the "job." But Stéphane isn't any more successful in arousing Solange than her husband had been. Eventually, it is a 13-year-old boy who quenches Solange's erotic yearnings. Get Out Your Handkerchiefs won a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar as well as a French César award for Best Score (by Georges Delerue). ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Story of a dim-witted husband (Gerard Depardieu) who is at his wit's end trying to make his wife (Carol Laure) happy again. So he starts pawning her off to whatever guy comes around to see if they can make her happy while she apathetically & silently knits. The story is a bad attempt at comedy (the matching knits sweaters that begin to appear on al the male actors) that she is creating, but all is overshadowed by the irresponsibility immorality accosting the viewer. It crosses the line by depicting an affiar between Solange (Carol Laure) and a 13 year old brainiac she meets at a summer camp which succeeds in impregnating her finally. Yuck! While he is the primary seducer, SHE as an adult IS responsible to not participate in the pedophilia. Disgusting & disgraceful. I'm glad Blockbuster does NOT have this film available. It's grotesque.

I feel I have to write about this movie which on a cinematographic point was a good movie (great acting), but on a moral point is totally irresponsible and immoral. Never mind that this movie glorifies adultery, most French movies do! Our society (including the French!) condemns sexual relationships with children and yet, this movie promotes it... Am I missing something?!
