What if virtual reality wasn't just for fun, but was being used to imprison you? That's the dilemma that faces mild-mannered computer jockey Thomas Anderson (Keanu Reeves) in The Matrix. It's the year 1999, and Anderson (hacker alias: Neo) works in a cubicle, manning a computer and doing a little hacking on the side. It's through this latter activity that Thomas makes the acquaintance of Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), who has some interesting news for Mr. Anderson -- none of what's going on around him is real. The year is actually closer to 2199, and it seems Thomas, like most people, is a victim of The Matrix, a massive artificial intelligence system that has tapped into people's minds and created the illusion of a real world, while using their brains and bodies for energy, tossing them away like spent batteries when they're through. Morpheus, however, is convinced Neo is "The One" who can crack open The Matrix and bring his people to both physical and psychological freedom. The Matrix is the second feature film from the sibling writer/director team of Andy Wachowski and Larry Wachowski, who made an impressive debut with the stylish erotic crime thriller Bound. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

AMAZING, the whole programming and "plugging in" thing is SO THOUGHT PROVOKING! A little bit too violent, but as long as you know right from wrong, I think it's great! My Mom thinks its okay and my 12-yr-old sister (who crys if you poke her) LOVES it!

One of the best sci-fi, action movies ever made. Definitely ahead of its time, but you still have to credit Roger Peckinpaugh's classic film, "The Wild Ones," as being the first film to feature slow mo camera shots of action. Peckinpaugh is the godfather of action movie filmmaking.

Perhaps the best summmary of this movie is that it is the direct ancestor of both Avatar and Men in Black. It is also a kung-fu movie, only set in sci-fi. So one can expect that this hodge-podge won't be as good as any of the classics that stick to their particular genre. But to be fair, in 1999 they were still using black screens with white text; the effects are pretty spectacular when you take that into account. Largely a one-man show for Keanu Reeves (that should be enough to hold down any dramaic expectations) with a very strong supporting cast. Carrie-Ann Moss, while maybe not a classic beauty, has that certain something to make her very appealing; Trinity certainly provides the only spark of human interest in the movie to make it more than just another circuit-chip flick.

Wow. Groundbreaking, original, shockingly good. Its like a great Twilight Zone story with outstanding effects and action. I think this is one of the best films ever made, or at least in the top five.
