Nick Chen (Chow Yun-Fat) was the first Chinese-born immigrant in the NYPD, and is now one of the force's most decorated officers. As such, he's been named leader of the city's Asian Gang Unit, who are the primary peacekeepers in Chinatown. Trouble has just arrived for the Triads, the long-entrenched Chinese gangsters who are the real power behind Chinatown. After years of posing as honest businessmen, the Triad's powers are threatened by the newly arrived Fukienese Dragons. With a gang war on the horizon, the city sends a new recruit, Danny Wallace (Mark Wahlberg), to join Chen's unit. Danny finds Chen and the AGU in a very comfortable (perhaps too comfortable) relationship with the Triads. When the mobsters attempt to corrupt Danny, Chen must reassess his relationship with the Triads, and Danny must also learn that certain concessions must be made to ensure the peace in this world set apart from the rest of New York. ~ Ron Wells, Rovi
Good cop movie with some interesting plot twists with conflicted characters. Mark Wahlberg is the allegedly unexperienced new guy whose assignment is to investigate his partner who does not always follow established procedures. Good themes regarding personal loyalty versus following the rules and when does being practical become corruption. Enjoyable-- B grade but watch it.
Mark Wahlberg plays an green undercover IA agent assigned to Chinatown to investigate corruption within the precinct. He soon learns how things are done in Chinatown. When his partner (Chow Yun-Fat)is suspected ,he discovers that the right thing to do is not so black and white. Good Car Chases, Asian Gang Violence.
The Corruptor is a tour de force for Chow Yun-Fat. His scowl and pervasive smile take over the screen as he brings his inimitable presence to the first Chinese ever to head a NYPD Unit, The Asian Unit. When a new gang threatens to start a war in Chinatown, a new, rising detective, Danny Wallace, joins Nick Chen's unit as a rank outsider. Whalberg shows the depth of his ability as he plays an uncertain, yet confident, man out of his element. He speaks Chinese and hears more than the others want him to hear. That keeps him afloat in this literally, non-stop action flick about power and trafficking in illegal aliens. It might help to remember that when America's Civil War began, several ships were being fitted out as "Slave Ships" in New York Harbor, the same docks these Chinese use. The story is "good undercover cops versus bad," and becomes a story of friendship and how difficult it can be to develop and earn that elusive trust. I recommend this to all movie lovers!
I love a good vengeance cop movie. This was that and more! Plot twists, who's good - who's not, and I actually didn't see the ending before it happened. You know, the "I know how this will end" kinda thing. I liked the movie! Not enough to own it but I was entertained. The conversations about race in the dialogue were stereotypical. *shrugs* I still liked the movie.
