The Gay Divorcee (1934)
Member Rating:
Based on Dwight Taylor and Cole Porter's play of the same name, The Gay Divorcee centers on Mimi (Ginger Rogers), a woman seeking a divorce from her husband. Mimi travels to an English seaside resort, pursued by the love-stricken Guy (Fred Astaire), whom she mistakes for the hired correspondent in her divorce case. Among the many musical numbers featured are "Night and Day," the only song from the original Broadway musical included in the film, and "The Continental," which won the first ever Academy Award for Best Song. Directed by Mark Sandrich, the film features supporting performances by Alice Brady and Edward Everett Horton. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi

I didn't expect it to be so funny! Ginger's character Mimi hires an attorney to help her get a divorce in the age when "irreconcilable differences" didn't exist as a reason. The attorney hires a male escort to help her get "caught cheating" by her husband, without any real affair occurring of course. Ginger's character mistakes Astaire's for the gigolo and all sorts of hilarity ensue. Astaire gets quite a few good one-liners out of the role. The dancing is magnificent, but the story is very good for some laughs as well.

We enjoyed this Astaire/Rogers movie. It is always a pleasure to see these two dance; arguably the greatest dance team of the 20th Century.
