The Gate (1987) Reviews

The Gate (1987)
Member Rating:
During a boring, routine weekend, young Glen (Stephen Dorff) and his best buddy, Terry (Louis Tripp), decide to explore Glen's backyard. Before long, the boys come across a strange hole in the ground which yields all manner of sinister prizes. Consulting one of his heavy-metal record albums, Glen comes to the correct conclusion that the hole is actually the Gate to Hell. Offering a sacrifice in the form of a dead dog, Glen further opens the portals of Hades, through which pass some of the most hideous demons imaginable. A surprise box-office hit, The Gate yielded a sequel, predictably titled Gate II. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This is one of the best horror movies ever.No the acting isn't top notch, its the 80's.But it is scary as hell.Demons take over a house with kids in it.They come out of a hole in the ground, weird things happen..enough to give someone a nightmare. For hardcore horror fans it won't scare..but it will give you chills, unless you've got a problem. This one isn't easy to forget, definately not one for kids to watch.

I remember watching it as a very young kid. I liked it...it kept my attention. The special effects weren't great, but you also have to understand that it's an old movie. It's a good movie, but not suitable for the very young (age 12+)

I saw this several times since the time it came out in the 80's and it is an original sometimes funny, sometimes campy movie that you just love to watch. Very original for it's time and often unique in the creation of the stop-motion wizardry.

This move scared the heck out of me when I was a little kid and it had just come out. I watched it again recently and remembered enough of that fright to laugh a lot in the second viewing. Worth it if you have a similar memory of its release, but otherwise does not really hold up compared to more modern special effects laden horror films.

A good classic 80s horror movie, sub par acting with people you may recognize who have now become 'stars'. Great special effects for the time, good concept. I must say tho, contradicting the other reviews, I have always felt since I watched this as a kid that it was one of the horror movies more 'for kids'. Granted no horror movie is 'for kids' but this one is pretty tame, not a lot of gore and the 2 'heros' are kids. Not to mention the movie was so tame (by todays standards) it only garnered a PG13 rating...

all the memories this movie brought back! not a great movie, but entertaining and fun to watch. some of the special effx hold up, but you have to remember this was made in the 80's. in fact, now that i think about it, the scariest thing about this movie is the way everybody dressed. agree with David G., the original artwork is much better.

Fun 1980's supernatural horror movie aimed at teens. The special effects are pretty cool considering the time and budget. Not great but definitely entertaining and will bring back memories for those who grew up in the 80's like me.

I love this movie, great 80's flick. I don't know why they didn't go with the original art work?,I like it more,it gives it a more sinister look, but oh well.

90% of the acting was done by kids. This might be a good horror movie for kids but I don't think adults will enjoy it unless they havent grown up yet.
