I have read the books, and love the series. Lots of action, but also good character development. Sharpe is supposed to fail at training a ceremonial Spanish unit, but manages to succeed.

I would highly recommend this whole series. Like "Firefly" there's enough action to satisfy people, yet lots of good writing and characters and acting. Romance and action! Enjoy!
