Carl Franklin directed this family drama adapted from the 1995 novel by former New York Times columnist Anna Quindlen about a young woman who goes back home to take care of her dying mother. In 1987-88, independent Ellen Gulden (Renee Zellweger), a Harvard grad, is working on a New York Magazine investigative article when she hears from her father, George (William Hurt), a literary critic and university professor. He tells Ellen she's needed at home to care for her mother, Kate (Meryl Streep), who's due for surgery. Ellen needs to get away from the problems of her relationship with her boyfriend Jordan (Nicky Katt), but she plans to continue work on the magazine article from home. In truth, Ellen is uncomfortable with her mother's various ladies club lunches, and holiday preparations, and she finds communication with her mother awkward. Once Ellen arrives back home, she's dismayed to find herself caught in the web of her mother's Middle America activities. Ellen's attitude changes when it becomes apparent this probably will be the final Thanksgiving and Christmas with all family members present. But tensions erupt as long-buried family secrets emerge. Locations in New Jersey were used to create the film's Eastern coastal college town. Shown at the 1998 Montreal Film Festival. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi

Good story about how individuals in a family handle a family trial differently. Great performances by Meryl Streep (as always), Renee Zellweger and William Hurt.

I'm a cancer survivor. This movie hit so many emotions right on the head -- well done!

Pretty deep. A little slow in the beginning. I think this movie tells you to never judge a family from the outside. You never know whats going on with other peoples lives. Meryl Streep was excellent as well as Renee in their last chance to really know each other.

I always pick through the 4 for $20 movies at Blockbuster and just picked this up. It is watched so many times that it has no cover and I think my mom stole it for her house. Very emotional and passionate. One of Renee's best performances that I have seen and sadly one not seen enough by the public.

This movie was OK, but not as good as I thought it would be with these actors. A little slow going in the beginning.

Excellent movie in all ways. Family life and family crisis and survival. Thought provoking.

Proof, again, that Meryl Streep can play a wide variety of roles with great conviction. We really liked this movie!

Sally Sez: Terminal illnesses are not all handled in the same way by everyone. William Hurt chose to not be available while Renee Zellweger, with angst, chose to be a martyr. Meryl Streep chose not to let anyone in her family feel her pain - not until the very end. This was our second viewing since 1998. We saw things we never noticed during our first experience, With my mother dying of cancer in our home 33 years ago, I wept with remembrance.

Such a great movie. Anything with Meryl is obviously great, but the story as a whole was touching.
