This adaptation of John O'Hara's From the Terrace stars Paul Newman as Alfred Eaton, an unhappily married financial adviser, while his real-life wife, Joanne Woodward, portrays Mary St. John, his promiscuous screen spouse. Mary's libertine behavior is a by-product of her husband's inability to express love and affection, a trait he has inherited from his cold-blooded father. Mark Robson directs and Myrna Loy heads up a large supporting cast as Newman's alcoholic mother. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This is one of my all time favorite movies. The script for Newman and Balin was dorky for sure, but the love story made up for it. Best part of the movie? Ina Balin's performance. I fell in love with her nearly 50 years ago. So sad that she died 20 years ago. An absolute beauty! And the soundtrack- outstanding, moving music. Just be prepared for a long movie at 244 minutes.

Fine performances from all, particularly Paul Newman. The film explores whether the pursuit of money alone can bring happiness. It's also an excellent example of the changes in the hero role that occurred in the early 60's. For film buffs, this is a must watch!

A classic. Worth watching again. Story line has twists you don't expect. And of course Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward are great in any movie!

Great movie, love watching Paul. Very long but entertaining. It's the way movies used to be.

This movie reminded me of the talent one Paul Newman had. It had been awhile since I had seen him in anything. I loved the music that went along with each scene. The story was pretty unique in comparison to anything else I can remember seeing. The movie itself is something like 147 min. long, but I got so lost in the enjoyment of it all to even notice it was a longer movie (a lot of the time movies like this easily drag). Aside from Newman, pretty much every performance was great (especially Myrna Loy & Felix Aylmer). As a viewer I couldn't help but feel for the characters and the relationships between them. This movie had a classic techno color imagery to it as well as lighting that could be deemed as film noir-ish, a combination that could easily be misused, however was masterfully done in this film. I intend to see more movies directed by Mark Robson in the near future.

I saw this movie as an 11-12 year old, and just saw it as an older adult. I really think this was an excellent movie and that this is really the best of the Newman/Woodward movies they did together. and Ina Balin was excellent too as was the entire cast.
