"For God's sake, GET OUT!" was the ad campaign for the 1979 shocker The Amityville Horror. The film was based on the allegedly true story of the luckless Lutz family, who move lock, stock, and barrel into a new home, only to find that it is possessed by the demonic spirits of its previous owners. Variations of the Seven Deadly Plagues emanate from virtually every household fixture, while other forms of otherworldly mischief are suffered by the Lutz children. Enter kindly Father Delaney (Rod Steiger), who does his utmost to exorcise the house. The Amityville Horror was frequently greeted with laughs from its first-run audiences, especially after it was discovered that the "actual" events depicted in the film (based on a book by Jay Anson) were complete fabrications. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The Original Movie Here Beats the Remake in Every Way Shape and Form. The Remake Of this Is Horrible. Go with the Original.

This is a good movie. The key word here is "movie". Who cares if it was a hoax. Afthe watching this movie as akid I had nightmares for weeks.

This was a very good horror film. This is an instant classic.I love the fact that it's based on a true story.I recommend this movie, but I don't recommend Amityville dollhouse.I saw this movie when I was 7 and it scared me.

Great movie. A must see for anyone that loves the horror genre. Nothing gory, but scares and a creepy house. Has some slow moments but those can easily be overlooked.

first of all it was very anti-climatic and had a really bad ending, but it you're looking for a good middle-of-the-night, spooky tale this is a good one

Classic horror film. Better when I was younger, but still pretty good.

First of all, Ron Defoe is a real mass-murderer who killed his entire family as they slept. The Lutz's are also real people, though their story has long been exposed to be a hoax; George Lutz himself swore under oath in a court of law that crucial aspects of the story were fabricated. As for the movie itself, meh. It's got pretty much every cliche a haunted house movie could have. The acting goes from being hokey one minute to just plain hollow the next. The one good thing I can say is the music score is downright creepy. Overall, avoid this like the plague. It's not one of those so-bad-it's-good movies, nor is it even good for a cheap laugh. For some reason people seem to like this movie. I guess people just want to believe sensational stories like this are true, regardless of how many times someone demonstrates it to be a hoax. If the movie made clear that it was fiction, perhaps people would see this for what it really is; uninspired garbage.

I rented this movie after watching and loving the remake. This one didn't impress me at all. Not as good of special effects, music, or actors...I couldn't even finish it. Don't waste your time with this one. If you're into horrors, I definitely recommend the remake!

I think it must have been the naivity of youth that convinced me that this movie was actually scary. I watched it again after 24 years and thought it was ridiculous. This would be a good movie to rent just to get a few good laughs, though. See it for the humor, not horror.
