Follow Me, Boys! (1966)

Follow Me, Boys!, Disney's paean to the Boys Scouts of America, leaves no cliché unturned: we're even offered the old reliable "kid hanging over cliff by rope" bit. Corny, sentimental and obvious though it may be, the film is a delight to watch, especially whenever Fred MacMurray dominates the screen. MacMurray plays Lem Siddons, a 1930s musician who decides to settle down in a small Midwestern town. Here he meets pretty bank teller Vida Downey (Vera Miles), who bemoans the fact that the local boys have no organized activities with which to occupy their time. Volunteering to be a scoutmaster, Lem begins a local scout troop. There are some tense moments when banker Ralph Hastings (Elliot Reid) demands that Lem's scouts vacate their headquarters, but Reid's feisty millionaire Aunt Hetty (Lillian Gish) comes to the rescue. The film's throughline is the regeneration of local "tough kid" Whitey (Kurt Russell), who, after joining the Boy Scouts, straightens out and matures into a solid citizen. The film's lachrymose climax is kept "honest" by the sincere underplaying of Fred MacMurray. Though lambasted by reviewers, Follow Me, Boys! struck a responsive chord with filmgoers, to the tune of a $5.5 million box-office take. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I remember this film from my childhood and loved it. When my daughter found out it was about boy scouts, she was not too interested in watching the fim. However, it did not take long before even my daughter admitted that the movie was good. My son, a cub scout, is bugging us to purchase the film.

When I was little kid in the late 1960's I remember my mom taking my brother and I to the drive in movie theater (remember those??) to watch this Disney Classic. Fred MacMurray WAS my dad in my mind. I loved him in this and in My Three Sons, his TV series. Now I am all grown up and so are my sons, but we all love watching this movie over and over again. If you were ever a Boy Scout or a Boy Scout leader, you can't help but feel nothing but love for this movie.

I loved this movie. I'll buy it and if I can afford it, I'll give it away to my friends in Scouting leadership. I absolutely can't think of a movie that has touched me more deeply, brought tears to my eyes more often, than Follow Me Boys. Yes, I am a man, 41 years of age, and have been in BSA leadership positions for the last 15 years. Fred MacMurray is the prototypical Scout Master. Incidentally, this story also comprises a love story, a legal story and several civil themes. It is great for children and adults. My kids absolutely cheered when the boys captured a tank! I don't want to give away anymore. Please rent this great movie and get involved with Boy Scouting!

We enjoyed this old-fashioned disney film for a change of pace. Ended up watching it twice, once with our grand-daughter, who is 6 and she enjoyed it too. Nice to see the old vehicles and life in the "old days".

Great feel-good family movie! It's "Mr. Holland's Opus" with a scoutmaster instead of a music teacher. Features Kurt Russell when he was around 12 yrs old.

Coming from a true Eagle Scout, I really enjoyed this film. It truly portrays what it means to be a Boy Scout. I first saw this film in 1995 at my first Boy Scout Function. I had almost forgotten about it until I saw it again in 2005 at the 2005 National Boy Scout Jamboree. The story in this film reminds us Boy Scouts what it really means to "Do a Good Turn Daily", and to "Truly follow the Scout Oath and Law." I recommend this film to everyone, especially Boy Scouts.

A classic, for good reason. This is from the era of Disney that celebrated the good in people.

This is a wonderful family movie. The acting is fantastic. Teaches great values. Enjoyable for families with a scout or not. Our whole family loved the film. Good enough to own.

My whole family loved this movie. Then for the next week anywhere we went the kids would be singing the "Follow Me" song. It was predictable for the most part, the good guys were rewarded in the end, etc. It is a definite feel gooder, appropriate for families.
