Australian filmmaker John Duigan followed up his captivating The Year My Voice Broke with Flirting. Noah Taylor repeats his "Danny" characterization from the earlier film, while Thandie Newton plays a Ugandan exchange student who attends an Australian girls boarding school. Billeted at a nearby boy's school, Danny finds himself falling in love with Newton, though he is frequently at a loss as to how to express himself. Flirting is the second in a proposed trilogy of John Duigan-directed films revolving around Danny's "awkward" years. Featured in the cast as one of Newton's schoolmates is Nicole Kidman. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
I'm surprised no one's reviewed this yet--and reviewed it favorably.
This is a surprisingly entertaining comedy with a witty script, a knowing view of private schools and private cliques, and Thandie and Nicole are sexy as hell.
Ends nicely too.
Somebody watch this thing; it's worth it.
You won't be disappointed.
A huge mistake on my part for choosing this dvd, I had no idea what it was about and when I did turned it on I could not get into it and I did tried several times with no success - I just wasn't in the mood for the dialogue, maybe another time but I really doubt it.
Typical Boarding School movie set in 1965 with lots of obligatory scenes of corporal punishment, which we did have back then, but always exaggerated in films to make the administrators look sadistic, when in reality we who actually lived through it know most kids had it coming, and it really wasn't this extreme. Overlaid on this version is a teen-age bi-racial affair, and then there's Nicole Kidman looking like the healthy teenager she was at the time, before she starved herself into her present twig configuration. Overall amusing entertainment, but you've seen this before.
