Flight of the Intruder (1990)

Two pilots go against the rule book in a bid to win the war in Viet Nam in this speculative military drama. Lieutenant Jake Grafton (Brad Johnson) is a U.S. Navy pilot stationed aboard an aircraft carrier after the death of his one-time flying partner Morgan McPherson (Christopher Rich), who perished during a recent, ill-advised mission. Lt. Grafton, who has become cynical about the current state of military affairs, is convinced that if the war were left to the soldiers rather than the politicians overseeing the Pentagon, United States victory would be swift and assured. Grafton shares this opinion with Virgil Cole (Willem Dafoe), a supremely confident new pilot under his command, and together they commandeer an A-6 Bomber, known as The Intruder, for an unauthorized bombing raid against Hanoi. The city had been declared off-limits because it was believed that it would have a negative impact on the Paris peace talks, so the raid lands Grafton and Cole in hot water. However, when the talks break down, President Richard Nixon authorizes the pilots to lead a new strike against Hanoi with everything they've got. Ving Rhames and David Schwimmer both appear in small roles that predated their respective rises to fame (in fact, this was Schwimmer's first movie). ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

The character played by Danny Glover was based in part on a real Black Naval aviator who later became a general officer. The aerial scenes are more realistic than Top Gun and of some historic interest. The main character, Jake Grafton, is depicted very much as he appears in the original novel. The anticks of Navy life aboard ship and in the Pacific rim are congruent with the stories I heard over my 19 year career in the military although not at the same time depicted in the movie. I enjoy watching this movie because it is an entertaining Viet Nam war theme which appears realistic and somewhat historically accurate.

The carrier and aerial footage are great. The overall plot is good also but the dialog is a bit too Hollywood.

the cast of stars are good but the direction was very bad , it brought down the whole movie ,it was thrown together ,which looks like bad editing! the dvd was going bad at the end of the movie [funtion wise not movie ,which stunk all the way through] it is not worth buying or renting, it was a disapointment to see danney glover do so bad , it ws another unwise choice of selection of movies to play in!

This was a first class action film with Danny Glover, Wilhem Dafoe and Brad Johnson all playing realistic roles.I had seen this film not long ago but enjoyed it more the second time around..the action scenes were very real to say the least and nothing was spared. Also the humor as well as the pathos were true to life without the usuall Hollywood embellishments..31/2 stars!
