If you like period movies, I think you will enjoy this one. It is definitely gritty, it's not rated for a reason. While some scenes are difficult to watch, overall I thought the movie was well done. I found myself hating, liking, and hating some more the character of Martin. Blockbuster isn't getting this one back until the copy I bought arrives. Was this review helpful? Yes

I used to rent this when it debuted on VHS in the 80s. Happy to report it still hold up thanks to the capable direction of Paul Verhoven of TOTAL RECALL and ROBOCOP fame. This a damn decent, sexual and violent tale from the middle ages. Transfer is solid as well. Was this review helpful? Yes

The movie seems to be a pretty accurate depiction of the 17th century. The movie is brutal and contains a lot of nudity (esp. Jennifer Jason Leigh), but in context it appears to represent the times. Some of the action scenes really strain credibility and nearly all the character development appears to have ended up on the cutting room floor. Tom Burlinson is not particularly believable, but Rutger Hauer and to a lesser extent Jennifer Jason Leigh seem to make a real effort to give their characters life. Jack Thompson in a supporting role as Captain Hawkwood is outstanding and completely believable. If youâd like a movie that gives a good sense of the historical beginning renaissance period and you donât mind full frontal nudity, it is worth watching, but it probably isnât a movie that most would enjoy watching repeatedly. Good depiction of the early middle ages, with the war, mercenaries, rape, pillage and plundering. Rutger Hauer acts as Rutger Hauer in this movie, but the rest of the cast was well above average. The scripting was right on and dialogue and protrayal of the events and people were execellent and relatively authentic. Was this review helpful? Yes

Lets get the basics out of the way, the acting is decently done, the plot is standard, the makeup and costumes are great- I specificly liked that there was not much use of makeup on the women...as things would be.
This movie is renowned for its "rape scene" and it is a very vivid portrayal. The movie is very "real" sometimes you watch movies and you can tell that it is cutting things or not showing you something that would logicly happen- this movie shows you, and it shows you it all. Blood, gore, nudity of both sexes (top and bottom) and more.
It is a good story, I did not care for the ending but it was good. Was this review helpful? Yes

This movie gives a real-to-live flashback to the times it is set- the nudity is brash and there is only one part where they implore self cencorship and that is not to expose a certian part of the body spread open- other than that it is blunt and real *spoiler* the baby sence and its 'buriel' just sets the stage for what untill then could be seen as standard bloddy faire. This movie is as close as you can get to takeing a journey back in time to the "DARK" ages and observing its real raw grit. Was this review helpful? Yes

Quite disappointing. I expected more of Verhoeven. He should stick to contemporary themes. Was this review helpful? Yes

Holy God, this movie was great! now a lot of people get their pants in a bunch over the rape, but it was fairly tame in the R rated version, but outrightly brutal when uncut. That aside, the main chick, jennifer jason leigh was just freaking hot. I mean even now in her 40's I'd still..., well anyway for a proper period piece, this will do. Save for the anachronistic waxed body [ha, ha!] and such. my opinion, the gospel according to Ryan. C. Was this review helpful? Yes

An opportunity for Jennifer Jason leigh to have a starring role and to have an excuse to use this vehicle to display a lot of nudity. If you decide to watch the movie, please provide the rationale for Rutger to scale the castle wall with Jennifer in tow. Was this review helpful? Yes

I thought this fell into the Xena genre of good theatre pretending to be bad theatre. I didn't care for the sets or costumes or porno-caliber acting, but the more believable parts are of the writing we quite good.
As for why he took Jennifer up the wall, it was for the same reason he did everything else; because secretly he cared for her, and knew his men would rape her to death as soon as he left her alone with them. Was this review helpful? Yes
