River of Grass (1994)

River of Grass has all the elements of a conventional road movie: a car, a gun, criminal plans, and young lovers on the run from an angry father who also happens to be a suspended police officer. But writer and director Kelly Reichardt has instead taken these familiar elements and fashioned an anti-road movie, a deadpan film that is more existentialist comedy than crime drama. The young lovers in question are Cozy, the cop's daughter, and Lee Ray, a shady character from the wrong end of town. Lee Ray comes into possession of a pistol, and soon he and Cozy find themselves unintentionally involved in a shooting. Fearing capture by the law, the two make plans to leave town, committing a series of robberies on the way. However, they don't manage to get very far; indeed, the film's central premise is how the romantic myth of lovers on the lam proves disappointing in the face of a far more pedestrian reality. This well-received, low-budget indie was shot on location in South Florida, placing its story against an appropriately depressed landscape of sun-bleached strip malls, barren highways and overgrown, swampy fields; the title is another name for the Florida Everglades. ~ Judd Blaise, Rovi

What the heck were the critics on that loved this low budget badly filmed snoozer. Plenty of bad audio, frozen frames and endless scenes of nothing important to watch. I lived in South Florida the same time period this awful movie was filmed and personally avoided and lived far away from the lazy trailer trash deadbeats this film portraits about their bleak depressing life. Why would anyone be interested in spending an hour and a half watching a bored mom spending her entire day spinning around in circles in the backyard or lying on her bed staring at the ceiling fan wishing she was doing something else. (So was I) If you enjoy watching a movie with long scenes of people just staring out the windows becuased they're bored or even more boring highway views of the South Florida concrete jungle, then dont hesitate to waste your time with this really bad film. Better yet, spend the time instead watching paint dry.

Vague story line and very grim west Maimi Dade county locations combined with low production values and terrible sound make this unwatchable. Skip it.

I am a big fan of Kelly Reichardt and loved his last three films. River of Grass doesn't measure up to those films but the potential of what is to come is clearly there. This movie is for die hard fans of Reichardt.
