In this gritty Australian drama, the nihilistic son of Greek immigrants indulges in 24 hours of hedonism in ethnically conflicted inner-city Melbourne. Ari (Alex Dimitriades), a 19-year-old layabout, spends his time picking up strange men for furtive sex; dealing, and doing, speed with his friends; fighting with his conservative father and beleaguered mother; and trying to look after his younger sister, Alex (Andrea Mandalis), who's involved in a clandestine relationship with a young Lebanese guy. Although Ari rails against the racism of Australian society, he's also a bit of a bigot himself. And despite his enthusiastic participation in Greek activities -- weddings, fortune tellers, music, and dancing -- he's also repulsed by his culture's intolerance. Best friend Johnny (Paul Capsis), who defiantly dresses up as his own dead mother, is an outcast, but the straight-seeming Ari refuses to drop him. During the course of a single day, Ari fools around with his friend Betty (Elena Mandalis) and several men of various ages and nationalities. He also pines away for Sean (Julian Garner), a dreamy college friend of his brother's, who may offer a loving alternative to self-destructive excess. When Ari and Johnny are arrested and brutalized by a pair of race-baiting cops, however, the chance for redemption seems more remote than ever. Adapted from the Christos Tsiolkas novel Loaded, Head On marked the feature debut of writer/director Ana Kokkinos, herself an Australian of Greek extraction. The film was shown in the Directors Fortnight section at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Brian J. Dillard, Rovi

This film will grab you from the start and never let you go. One of the best film that depicts our youth in todays society, looking for self exploration, drugs, sex and understanding. Superb performance by Alex Dimitriades which aides by an amazing scrip and great supporting cast. This is a definatly MUST SEE!!!

Hot Ari finds the dead end opportunities of being a Greek immigrant in Australia and the homophobic culture around him too much too deal with. Excellent and sometimes hard to take movie.

I hated this movie. I really hated the ending. But the movie is so haunting that I went out and bought a copy. It's tale of self-destruction that, while disturbing, is also immensely powerful. It is not an easy movie to watch. It is not a "sit back and munch popcorn" movie, but is one that you will remember.

The Wal-Mart of gay films strikes again with a story that should be a little engaging if not downright exciting but this was pretty dull from first scene to last and while the star is indeed good looking no amount of handsomeness can make up for 90 minutes of tedium. Rent at your own peril (you've been warned).

The acting and the filming were basically good but the story went absolutely nowhere and was, in my opinion, pathetic. If I knew the movie was just about abusing drugs and booze, having sleezy, annonymous, and almost violent sex I would have never rented it.

The acting was very good, the conflicts were set to be resolved, the characters were believable... disappointing and depressing should not have been the outcome.

5 stars based solely on nudity.

It's Greek to me why anyone would think this story needed to be filmed. Waste of a good cast. The protagonist, "Ari", are we supposed to like him? Admire him? Pueww. He stinks and so does this movie.

An absolute waste of time. Acting is terrible. Storyline is incomprehensible. Not even a good round of Greek dancing in the movie. We don't need anymore stories about homosexuals and their sad lives. After viewing this film I have no idea about how the ordinary Greek has tried to assimilate himself into Australian society and culture.
