First Men in the Moon is an H.G. Welles cinemadaptation from director Nathan Juran. When scientists in the year 1964 are confused by evidence of a long-ago space flight, nonagenarian Arnold Bedford (Edward Judd) explains all. Back in 1899, Bedford, eccentric scientist Joseph Cavor (Lionel Jeffries) and heroine Kate Callender (Martha Hyer) took a trip to the moon in a home-made space vehicle. Once on the lunar surface, they encountered an alien civilization resembling an ant colony, complete with "queen," soldiers and workers. How they returned, and the aftereffects of their journey, comprise the film's final third. Like everyone else I saw this flick years ago. I think I saw it on some local TV channel on a Sunday afternoon. This is a real good movie. Of course it's as old as the hills and a lot of people don't like anything that isn't new and filled with CGI. Ray Harryhousen is the man behind the stop motion effects in this movie and many others. There are two special featurettes with this movie. One is about Dynamation, which is Harryhousens forte. And then there's The Harryhousen Chonicles which is really good. They tell the life story of Harryhousen from the time he was a kid and first got started in stop motion. And he was really good even at his first efforts. He went to see King Kong when he was a kid and that was his inspiration to learn stop motion. It made him rich and famous.

I saw this movie probably 30 years ago on a weekend afternoon and it stuck with me all these years later. A re-watching was hard being used to MTV edits and dumbed down story lines. It takes a while to get going, but when they finally get to the moon things pick up. I'd love to see a re-make, but I fear they would turn it into an explosion fest/shoot'em up. There is a feature on this DVD about the stop motion artist that I actually enjoyed more than the film. I may rent it again in the future just to watch the speacial feature again.

Although the Ray Harryhausen stop action creatures are well done as usual, the fact that the Martians are played as men in fake looking insect suits weakens the fantasy aspect of this story. Also, the story is fairly lame, so in the end you don't really care about what happens. The strong point of the disc is the Ray Harryhausen Chronicles in the special features. If you have not seen these and are a fan of Ray's movies you must rent this. It gives you a background of Ray's entire career and all his movies. It is very complete and well done. I give the documentary 4 1/2 stars.

A Great movie for a rainy day and bring back child hood memories. Five Stars ***** it will keep you on the edge of your seat and will use your own imagination to the fullest.

This movie is so much fun. I remember watching it as as morning matinee. The movie is up there with Mysterious Island and other similar movies. Its fun to watch the old creatures of that era. This is up there with old creature movies!

I saw this movie as a child and seeing it again decades later I am still impressed with the story line. The special effects are a little cheesy by today's standard, but it's still an enjoyable and fun movie -- not to be taken too seriously. Enjoy this one with your kids!
