In this WW II tragicomedy, famed Italian funnyman Roberto Benigni (The Monster) portrays Guido, who moves during the '30s from the country to a Tuscan town, where he is entranced by schoolteacher Dora (Nicoletta Braschi, Benigni's real-life wife). Dora likes Guido, but she remains faithful to her pompous fiancé, so Guido has an uphill struggle. Meanwhile, anti-Semitic attitudes lead to attacks against Guido's Jewish uncle (Giustino Durano). Leaping ahead to five years later, during WW II, Guido and Dora are married and have a son Giosue (Giorgio Cantarini). After they are imprisoned in a concentration camp, Guido goes to elaborate lengths to keep his son from understanding the truth of their situation. He tells the boy that they are competing with others to win an armored tank -- so everything from food shortages to tattoos is explained as necessary for participation in the contest. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi

Great movie, Great Acting! A light hearted spin on a very serious subject. Starts a little slow, but gets very interesting about halfway through. I have watched it in Italian with subtitles and English, I would have to say that it is more enjoyable in Italian. After the first 15 min, you won't realize you are reading subtitles. A must see.

My first viewing of a Roberto Benigni movie. I loved it! I watch quite a few foreign films, and don't mind subtitles at all. This was a great one!

Five star. Way out there. One of the greatest movies ever filmed. It should be a requirement of every citizen to watch this movie. A refreshing change to all of the banality out there. Dee D.

GREAT movie!!!! Loved it, never thought I would enjoy a foreign, sub-titled movie, but it was awesome, highly reommend it. It has laughter, drama and sadness but it leaves you "thinking" Would watch it again!

This film is amazing! The title didn't sound interesting, and I would have never thought it would be possible to use comedy to respectfully handle such a sober topic, but it truly was done--and wonderfully! Benigni is an absolute delight to see, as a character and as a person.

A movie that pokes fun at the Germans and the Holocaust as seen through the eyes of a child and a caring father who wants to keep it "a game". Very well done, funny and sad.

moving, beautiful movie, one of the best films ever made. Roberto excels once again. Also love his film "Il Monstruo" (hilarious comedy)

Tried to watch for 30 minutes. The main character was without substance and unbelievable. Just reminded me of a character out of Laurel and Hardy or Charlie Chaplin. Silly and boring.
