The plot of this Raymond Chandler-esque comedy crime caper from the Coen Brothers (Joel Coen and Ethan Coen) pivots around a case of mistaken identity complicated by extortion, double-crosses, deception, embezzlement, sex, pot, and gallons of White Russians (made with fresh cream, please). In 1991, unemployed '60s refugee Jeff "The Dude" Lebowski (Jeff Bridges) grooves into his laid-back Los Angeles lifestyle. One of the laziest men in LA, he enjoys hanging with his bowling buddies, pompous security-store owner Walter Sobchak (John Goodman) and mild-mannered ex-surfer Donny (Steve Buscemi). However, the Dude's life takes an alternate route the afternoon two goons break into his threadbare Venice, California, bungalow, rough him up, and urinate on his living room rug. Why? Because Jackie Treehorn (Ben Gazzara) is owed money by the wife of a certain Jeff Lebowski. However, the goons grabbed the wrong Jeff Lebowski. With the right info, they would have invaded the home of philanthropic Pasadena millionaire Jeffrey Lebowski (David Huddleston). The Dude looks up his wealthy namesake, manages to get a replacement for his rug, and meets the millionaire's sexy young wife Bunny (Tara Reid). Later, Jeffrey ("The Big") Lebowski calls in the Dude to deliver a $1 million ransom for the return of his kidnapped wife. Fine -- except that Walter intrudes and botches the ransom drop. As events unravel, the Dude gets caught up in the schemes of Lebowski's daughter, erotic artist Maude (Julianne Moore), encounters both cops and bad guys, and drifts through an elaborate bowling fantasy sequence titled Gutterballs. The soundtrack includes Bob Dylan, Yma Sumac, Moondog, Captain Beefheart, and the Sons of the Pioneers. ~ Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide

One of my favorite movies, gets funnier each time I watch it. But it's not for eveyone. Foul language, drug use, adult humor. I recommend it to everyone, but from what I can tell - young adults LOVE it, and older adults HATE it. It's got to be a generational thing. So if you're between 18 and maybe 40, this movie is a huge must-see!

Great movie, probably one of my favorite movies of all time, the plot, the dialog, and the dark comedy are all well done.

This is the best movie ever made. It's really funny, has fantastic looking camera shots, dialogue and a great use of music throughout. A warning though, this is one movie that gets better the more times you watch it. Some of the dialogue exchanges are difficult to understand the first few times you watch it. Eventually you get what they are talking about and that makes it so much more funny. Also, the f-bomb is dropped gratuitously, so if you have sensitive ears don't rent this one. Overall the quality of this flick warrants 5 stars!!!

Seriously this movie is hilarious! Not much of a plot to it, but John Goodman and Jeff Bridges are great! Everytime I watch it I pick up something I didn't see before, it is too funny!

After finally getting around to seeing this movie, almost 10 years after it first came out, it instantly moved to the top of my favorite movie list. This is a fantastic comedy, on the one hand it's pretty lowball stuff, lots and lots of swearing... but for the characters it makes sense. On the other hand you have a great bunch of characters only the Coen brothers could create. The plot is sketcy at best but the real genius here is the development of the characters and their impossible relationships. Jeff Bridges and John Goodman are brilliant in their roles. The Dude Abides.

My favorite Coen Brothers movie and one of my overall favorites. Jeff Bridges and John Goodman head up stellar cast. The movie takes place in the early 90s and centers around Jeff "The Dude" Lebowski played by Bridges. The movie starts with two thugs mistaking The Dude for another man named Jeff Lebowski. From a case of simple mistaken identity we are launched on a wild ride. Very strange plot and incredible script that really gives the talented cast something to work with.

The film has interesting characters and some very funny moments. But the plot meanders and so does your mind as you get deeper into the film. The plot doesn't really go anywhere, but its the characters that keep you watching. At the end of film, you may wish that you didn't see it in the first place.
