Bille August directed this Rafael Yglesias adaptation of the 1862 classic by Victor Hugo (1802-1885) about the quest of Inspector Javert to capture escaped convict Jean Valjean, originally an honest man who was jailed for stealing a single loaf of bread to feed the family of his starving sister. This new interpretation of Hugo's epic begins with Valjean (Liam Neeson), released after 20 years of cruelties and hard labor, reporting for parole in Dijon. Stopping at a bishop's house, he's treated with respect, but even so, he steals silverware, flees, and is captured. However, the bishop says the silverware was a gift, proving Valjean's innocence by giving him two silver candlesticks. Valjean is free, but the bishop asks him to treat others with equal kindness. By 1822, Valjean has risen to mayor of the village of Vigau, where he also maintains a successful factory. Joining the local police, Inspector Javert (Geoffrey Rush) is suspicious of Valjean's identity and eventually recognizes him as a former convict, but Javert has no proof when he carries his accusations to Paris. Valjean develops a relationship with Fantine (Uma Thurman), who lost her factory job because of local attitudes about her illegitimate daughter. The starving Fantine turns to prostitution, is arrested and tortured by Javert, and becomes ill. As she dies, Valjean promises to raise her daughter Cosette. Focusing on Valjean's life with Cosette (Claire Danes), the story is set amid the action of the July 1832 Revolution, a time when Cosette falls in love with a militant student, Marius (Hans Matheson). On the banks of the Seine, Valjean and Javert have their final confrontation. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi

Perhaps not true to the book, bit nevertheless still a great movie. Great acting, great plot. Get over it if you are dissapointed becasue is not like the book. This is a movie, not a tv mini-series! If you don't like adaptations then don't ever watch movies based on novels.

One of the most amazing stories ever written. The best adaptation of that story to film. This is my second favorite movie of all time!

This is the most touching story. The eventual "true" freedom that Jean Valjean eventually enjoys is so heartwarming. 5 Stars all the way!

wow this movie was great. It has a mixtchur of every thing in it. Theres Love, Sespents, and Action. This is my Favoret Movie with Liam Neeson in it. At first I didnt want to watch it because I saw the cover and thought it was going to be one of those old Midevil show. But boy was I wrong. You know how some people say dont juge a book by its cover? Well that saying gose the same movie. I gess what I am trying to say is that dont say you dont like a movie unless you watch it. Because I bet alot of people do that with this movie like I did and If they juge it before they watch it they are missing out on one of the greatest movies ever.

I was not at all impressed with this movie. First of all, it completely leaves out Eponine, so the tension of her unrequited love for Marius is gone. Also, Enjolras is supposed to be the one leading the revolution, and the movie puts Marius in that part. Then they insinuate romantic feelings between Valjean and Fantine. It's not much like the book or the musical. Very disappointing.

this is a horrible adaptation of a wonderful book and spectacular musical. Les Mis is a story that in the end is uplifiting but this movie has to many slow parts that take away from the story. Also, any fan of the book or play will immediatly be distracted by the glaring liberties taken with characters, plot, romances, etc. All in all, a poor movie which should have been done in musical form. If it had been a musical it would have started the fad of movie musicals well before RENT, Moulin Rouge, Phantom, and Chicago.

I don't think that this is as dramatic as the live play, but the movie is still very good. Liam Neeson vs Geoffrey Rush is a terrific theme throughout the movie.
