Bille August directed this Rafael Yglesias adaptation of the 1862 classic by Victor Hugo (1802-1885) about the quest of Inspector Javert to capture escaped convict Jean Valjean, originally an honest man who was jailed for stealing a single loaf of bread to feed the family of his starving sister. This new interpretation of Hugo's epic begins with Valjean (Liam Neeson), released after 20 years of cruelties and hard labor, reporting for parole in Dijon. Stopping at a bishop's house, he's treated with respect, but even so, he steals silverware, flees, and is captured. However, the bishop says the silverware was a gift, proving Valjean's innocence by giving him two silver candlesticks. Valjean is free, but the bishop asks him to treat others with equal kindness. By 1822, Valjean has risen to mayor of the village of Vigau, where he also maintains a successful factory. Joining the local police, Inspector Javert (Geoffrey Rush) is suspicious of Valjean's identity and eventually recognizes him as a former convict, but Javert has no proof when he carries his accusations to Paris. Valjean develops a relationship with Fantine (Uma Thurman), who lost her factory job because of local attitudes about her illegitimate daughter. The starving Fantine turns to prostitution, is arrested and tortured by Javert, and becomes ill. As she dies, Valjean promises to raise her daughter Cosette. Focusing on Valjean's life with Cosette (Claire Danes), the story is set amid the action of the July 1832 Revolution, a time when Cosette falls in love with a militant student, Marius (Hans Matheson). On the banks of the Seine, Valjean and Javert have their final confrontation. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi

I don't think that this is as dramatic as the live play, but the movie is still very good. Liam Neeson vs Geoffrey Rush is a terrific theme throughout the movie.

I first read the book in High School. Saw the play as an adult, then read the book again. You get a lot more out of this story as an adult. I have seen several versions of movies since. Though this version omits a few characters and facts, it closely portrays the essence of the book. The actors(resses) do a fantastic job putting this epic book on the screen. Great story of redemption and forgiveness. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS MOVIE. Interesting fact: The writter of this story also wrote the Humpback of Notre Dame.

I'll be honest, just by looking at the picture used for the cover of this movie had me saying to myself, "This movie is total shyte." But I read a few reviews and rolled the dice when I put it on my rental list. NOT WHAT YOU ARE EXPECTING! Even after reading this very review, it REALLY IS NOT WHAT YOU THINK IT WILL BE. Seriously, it was really good. Roll the dice my friend, roll the dice...

I love the musical....so the fact that so many details were left out like the other characters who had songs and things was kind of dissapointing...but overall, great flick!

It certainly has a good combination of great actors... At beginning I got upset because I thought the plot was too silly but then when I thought about the message behind, I was able to truly enjoy this story.

This movie seems like a classic type movie. Intense, great story, good acting, life lessons. My spouse gave it a five star and she is pretty unimpressed with movies mostly. You should see this movie even a second time if you have not seen it for years.
