The Big One (1997) Reviews

The Big One (1997)
Member Rating:
Comedic documentary filmmaker Michael Moore takes his film crew throughout the U.S. for The Big One, a behind-the-scenes video diary of the promotional tour for his book Downsize This! He appears at several chain bookstores throughout the nation, signing autographs and delivering wicked political commentary to audiences. Along the way, he stops at various small-town parking lots and malls, gathering brief interviews with assorted Americans. Some of his interview subjects include an ex-convict who was hired as cheap labor for TWA airlines while in prison and a group of Borders employees who organize a union. Brief celebrity appearances include Garrison Keillor, Studs Terkel, and Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen. In his typical ambushing fashion, Moore makes several cleverly unexpected visits to people in powerful positions. One attempt finds Moore bringing laid-off working mothers to visit a local government official with the intent of cleaning his office to show that they want a job. In Centralia, IL, Moore visits the Leaf candy company, who plans to move their factories to Mexico, resulting in massive layoffs. The camera crew heads into their administrative offices and attempts to meet with the CEO in witty trademark fashion. Other corporate targets include Johnson Controls, Pillsbury, and, finally, Nike, where CEO Phil Knight grants Moore some dialogue. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi

I like those who say he spills only "one side" of the story. Just so happens that the side he tells is the TRUTH that is left out of most if not all of the conservative news and talk. Fox News? Rush? Please. They tell you they are "fair and balanced" while shoveling a "far (right) and biased" line of cr@p that simple minded morons just love to gobble up. We need Michael Moore now more than ever to expose those lying thieving conservative num-nuts for who they are. Hillary in 2008!

Well worth seeing after a decade. Michael Moore gives an almost prophetic view of the economic situation in the US with the loss of jobs and the economy spinning into a downturn and possible depression. Michael's video is entertaining but very informative and gives us a realistic view of the corporate abuses and how jobs were lost the past ten years. Well worth seeing....again!

This movie was made in the 90's before all of his current releases and this was one of his best. He is on a book tour and runs into many workers who just want to be unionized and are threatened with losing their jobs if they vote for the union. Michael is seen before audiences and he is very poignant and funny. He should do stand-up. I liked this movie a whole lot for showing what really goes on in corporate American. The only business that recognized him was Nike, but it did him no good. He got now where in trying to get Nike to produce it's shoes here in the U.S.

I would love to say that this one was terrible or was awesome like the one.. but its just not that great or not that bad. I think it happens that he does do spin for his side but hey its his documentary. You have to know what you get from Mr. Moore. He is left wing and he is proud of that. So all the left wingers will LOVE this movie.. and all the right wingers will hate it. So take it as it is

Made almost 8 years ago about corporate downsizing, it would be interesting to do a follow up on the middle class midwesterners that lost their jobs and where are they now. Losing your mindless factory worker job that you've had since you were 18 is good or bad? Bottom line: rent it.

Michael Moore is great at telling his side of the story - not the entire story. I guess if you like that stuff then this is another good one. No one likes corporate layoffs - but there is a reason for them that is not fully explored in Mr. Moore's propaganda. Then again, like Roger and Me, if you want to believe his twisted storytelling then you will probably enjoy it.
