American Flyers (1985) Reviews

American Flyers (1985)
Member Rating:
It takes a fierce three-day bicycle race up in the mountains to reunite two formerly feuding brothers in this film written by Steve Tesich, the creator of another cycle movie, 1979's Breaking Away. This film will please the cycling lovers out there, as it includes actual footage taken from the famous Coors International Bicycle Classic, held in the Colorado Rockies. The plot revolves around the suspicion that one of the two brothers -- either the pragmatic sports doctor Marcus (Kevin Costner) or the impudent, driven David (David Marshall Grant) -- is likely afflicted with an inherited tendency toward cerebral aneurysms. ~ Rovi

This is a great movie - Even if you're not a cycling enthusiast. 20 years later it still has all the elements of what makes a movie great. Romance. Competition. Action. Family Conflict. Resolution. Product Placement. And Rae Dawn Chong in a mens shirt and nothing else. It's also neat to see Kevin Costner before he made it big.

This movie is not going to win any academy awards for best drama, but it is incredibly inspirational in its challenge to push toward victory with no excuses. The message and competitive nature of this film is unrivaled.

Campy but fun movie. Remember loving it 20 years ago in my teens- but now just enjoyed it for the cycling fan in me.

I finally watched this movie in 2008. Yeah, 23 years after it was put out. I never even knew Kevin Costner did this movie. The movie was alright, but it is very slow. It is a very inspiring movie and I atleast enjoyed that part about it. But be warned this is a movie about Bike Racing. Not to much exciting there. It is at least worth watching once.

A mustachioed Kevin Costner wearing spandex shorts on a bicycle? And I thought Rae Dawn Chong was the most ridiculous thing on screen. Choppy film that comes across severely dated by today's standards. Luckily for Costner, his epic about bicycling came out before Kevin Bacon's visionary 'Quicksilver'...
