Father Goose (1964)
Member Rating:
Deliberately casting his established screen image to the four winds, Cary Grant plays Walter Eckland, an unkempt, uncouth and unshaven beach bum in Father Goose. During World War II, Walter keeps busy relaying radio reports of Japanese air activity. But he's no hero, and in fact volunteered for this mission only because he's been promised a shipment of liquor by Australian naval officer Frank Houghton (Trevor Howard). Making matters worse for the misanthropic Eckland is the arrival of French schoolmistress Catherine Freneau (Leslie Caron) and her seven little-girl charges, whose plane has crashed nearby. The animosity between Walter and Catherine erupts into a slapping contest, with Walter dishing it out as well as taking it. Only when Catherine is bitten by a deadly snake does Walter express his affections for her. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This was a great family movie--a classic! My wife, my daughter and I all enjoyed it. Some comedy, some drama, some action, some romance. Unfortunately some, what we might call, "soft' profanity so use caution with young children. Norm in Texas.

This movie gives a lite dose of history and a sense of the risks the Island spotters, who remained behind, experienced. The stars are excellent in terms of a fun evening viewing that has some understated romance, some drama and tense situations and plenty of comic relief.

A hollywood story within an historical setting. It definitely works for the entire family as it has a little bit of everything. The bottom line is that you'll be pleasantly entertained. In my 40's, I very much appreciate both history as well as a good old movie. Love the good NEW ones, too!

Anything with Cary Grant is a winner. The chemistry between Cary and Leslie Caron creates a charming basis for a most enjoyable story with its share of action and mild comedy. And Trevor Howard is at his best.

I love Cary Grant films and romantic comedies. This film started out with a huge amount of potential; Grant's character was amusing and the situation he found himself in was great, until the female "protagonist" came along. I have enjoyed other films with an intentionally strained dynamic between the romantic interests before, but in this case the female lead was so irritating, so aggravating, so unbelievably self-entitled and obnoxious that it was simply annoying to watch the film with her in it. This is not a reflection on the acting of Leslie Caron; that is the way the character was written. She send children to steal Walter's (Cary Grant's character's) personal belongings, hides his property, and treats him like dirt even though he saved all of their lives. Then out of the blue, they decide to get married. It simply makes no sense because there is no romantic chemistry between them at all. This unbelievable dynamic and irritating behavior made the film much less enjoyable.

Father Goose is probably a comedy first, but there are many drama elements to it. It takes place in the South Pacific during World War II. Cary Grant is a likable drifter with a boat and dinghy who knows surrounding islands well. This makes the Australian Navy hilariously "cajole" him into helping them as he has been in the area a long time and a more mature officer(Trevor Howard) understands him well. He is to report when he sites Japanese planes from his location. He meets up with Leslie Caron and a group of school girls and hilarity, friendship, sharing, and romance slowly starts to build in the dangerous situation. There are lots of twists and turns. Trevor Howard, Leslie Caron, and Cary Grant are very good and fun in this film. There is quite a bit of good supporting acting. There is good plot, dialogue, comedy and well done settings.
