The Far Pavilions (1984) Reviews

The Far Pavilions (1984)
Member Rating:
The lavishly produced three-part telemovie The Far Pavilions was adapted from the best-selling novel by M.M. Kaye. Set in colonial India during the second Afghan war, the film concerns the exploits of Ashton Pelham-Martyn (Ben Cross), a British officer. Born and raised in India, Pelham-Martyn finds himself a victim of his own divided loyalties as he leads a campaign against the rebellious tribal leaders on the northwestern frontier. The meat of the drama is Pelham-Martyn's "forbidden" romance with his lifelong friend, half-caste Hindu princess Anjuli (Amy Irving). The supporting cast includes the illustrious likes of Omar Sharif and Christopher Lee. Filmed on location on a budget of $12 million (the most costly made-for-cable movie up to 1984), The Far Pavilions originally aired over the HBO service on April 22, 23 and 24, 1984. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I was shocked that you would actually have these two discs in your collection for rental. The quality is so poor, and the film so dark and gloomy and scratchy that I only watched a few minutes of the first disc and then mailed both back. Thus, I wasted my time with this movie. I should get a couple of extra discs at once to replace these unwatchable ones.

This is good but on the slow side as things were too drawn out, you are better off viewing The jewel in the crown.

It wasn't interesting enough. Should have been better for 1985. It didn't have enough romance. And the movie was supposed to be a romance! It wasn't the type of movie that you say " I gotta see this again!" You can take it or leave it.

Why your movies are always without subtaitles, especially this british-indien languidge is hard to understand in US. Otherwise movie visually is beautiful.

I neglected to check the "receive together" option on these two discs, so time elapsed between disc 1 and 2. Very enjoyable for Raj buffs with lavish recreations, but brace yourself. On disc 2 the story line becomes annoying and unbelievable - Amy Irving's character's attachment to her sister verges into crazy land and by the end of the movie you want Ben Cross to shoot her.

Excellent story and depicture of what it was like in 1865. The British are so errogant! Some scenes dragged out a little too long. I saw this movie on HBO when it first came out in 1984 and never forgot. Amy Irving is beautiful in this film - just wish they would have shown more of her.

Wow. A pretty epic movie given the time period for the film and even during the time it was being made. Granted this is a verry long film but it really helps you understand the characters and their forbidden love. If you are a hopeless romantic at heart and if you respect and appreciate the Middle East culture in any way- you should watch this film.

Good historical story about a very dangerous part of the world. Very relevant to today's world. Good acting from the cast.

A wonderful epic based on a fabulous novel. I highly recommend you read the novel and see this movie. Probably most appealing to women.

Makes you feel sad while good! As they rode off into Tibet I enjoyed the simpleness of the movie
