The Fantastic Planet (1973)
Member Rating:
A French/Czech co-production, the dream-like La Planete Sauvage concerns the degradation of the Oms, human-like creatures on the futuristic planet Yagam. The Oms are kept as pets and beasts of burden by the Draggs, 39-foot beings who comprise Yagam's ruling class. The status quo is upset when Terr, one of the Oms, accidentally receives an education, whereupon he organizes the other Oms to demand equality with the Draggs. Based on Stefen Wul's novel Ems En Serie, Fantastic Planet was the winner of a 1973 Cannes Film Festival grand prize. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This movie is in french or english with English Subtitles. It is a very deep sci-fi story with major parallels to our own current socio-political problems. Originally written regarding the Russian/Czechoslovakian conflict of the 1960's this film portrays oppression and resulting conflict in a very artistic manor. Transports you back to the 1970's in terms of its on screen look. Highly recommended.

A sly allegory for modern times, "Fantastic Planet" exemplifies the fight against opression. Yet it maintains its appeal to the casual viewer. If you liked watching "The Wizard of Oz" with "Dark Side of the Moon" you will be thrilled with "Fantastic Planet." It's full of ramblings and wild surreal imagery.

I have such a long queue that I often forget how the movie I received even made it to the queue. This was the case for this film, but within minutes it had sucked me in. The first interaction between the Traggs and the Oms was a perfect intro, giving us just enough insight to place ourselves in the position of a defenseless Om. The film puts a "What if.." into everything we've ever known as a species and for that reason I find it most compelling. Depending of if you put yourself in the place of a Tragg or an Om changes the story dramatically. I feel that human nature can be most similar to that of the Traggs, while human form is obviously the Oms. One thing is for certain, you will think twice about the next animal or insect you kill.

I've been waiting for this movie for at least a year. They need to get more copies of this movie because its a really good movie and it's worth the wait.

This movie really is fantastic. What makes this movie/cartoon so memorable is how you're so quickly emmersed into the culture of the Traags and the Oms. I first saw this movie on "Night Flight" back in the late 1980's. I fortunately was able to subsequently record the broadcast for many repeat viewings, but alas, tape wears thin and quality wanes with each playing. This DVD release is pristeen in its wide screen glory. For sci-fi animation buffs, this movie is a "must see". The artistic style reminds me of Moebius, the French artist whose art work graced many an issue of "Heavy Metal" magazine, circa 1981-83.

Great movie and still ahead of it's time! Was blown away by the inventive scenery and creatures. Loved the background sounds and soundtrack in general. A simple yet complex movie all around. A must see for sure!

Animation was poorly done stop/go animation. Animation was not smooth and life-like such as Disney's or other modern animators. There were sections of the film with animated men and women dancing together in the nude, including full views of penises and breasts (poorly animated at that) - this was in the scene of the "Strange" planet where the 39 foot tall people went to have sex and breed. The background in the animations were largely non-existent which made for really uninteresting scenes. The musical score was painfully dull and repetitious. The score was made up of one simplistic phrase that was repeated again and again in different keys. They must have had a very tight budget so they cut costs in the background music. The story itself was wafer thin and much too slow to keep ones interest. This movie took two hours to tell a 10 minute story. In essence, the best part of this movie was when it ended. I give this movie a .5 on a scale of 5.

Reminds you of Beatle's Yellow Submarine, but more of an acid trip. Interesting annimation and story, but not for anyone teetering on artistically challenged.

This movie was insane. I watched it 12 or 13 times before I was finaly content with what I had seen and why the director was making me see it. I used this movie to write a 10 page paper and it was definatly enough tangled up in this movie to keep it going.

This movie is very slow and esoteric, and therefor somewhat challenging to view. I found myself advancing X4 through the parts with no dialogue.
