Fandango (1985)
Member Rating:
The still unknown Kevin Costner carries this film that involves five college roommates on a last "fandango" before they separately face the harsh realities of an unpredictable future. It is 1971, and the Vietnam War has not yet ended. Gardner Barnes (Costner) has extended his college years by six semesters in an attempt to stave off the rapidly approaching future, Kenneth (Sam Robards) has just canceled his wedding in a drunken look at reality, Lester (Brian Cesak) loves alcohol and tags along with the group just to have a good time, Dorman (Chuck Bush) is devoted to existentialism and flights of poetic fancy, and Phil (Judd Nelson) is barely a member of the group because he is consorting with the enemy: he is a member of ROTC. This unlikely mismatch cavorts through several classic college pranks, among them taking bets on daredevil acts like skydiving into the middle of nowhere. As their high jinks continue, it becomes apparent that their real desire is not to live a wild life for its own sake, but to postpone the moment when they will have to leave school and its lifestyle behind them. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

If you were around during Vietnam, this movie may make sense to you. I agree this movie demonstrates why Costner became a great actor. Judd Nelson also did a good job, playing someone who thinks they should be sensible all the time, and has almost buried their emotions and need for fun for the sake of fun. One of the definitions for Fandango in Webster's is: TOMFOOLERY The movie starts with a definition of Fandango which includes: a senseless foolish act. This movie could be viewed as: A Last Great Act of Defiance. If you have always been TOTALLY sensible, and your idea of great fun is to go to the Sonic and have a rootbeer float, you will probably not enjoy this movie. If you are more adventurous, and have ever considered the true meaning of life, and how sometimes a senseless act can make a statement, you will probably enjoy this movie.

My teenage daughter and I both really got a kick out of this movie. It had action, adventure, but mostly comedy, in an offbeat sort of story that had a heart to it. I would definitely recommend it. The soundtrack was a great mix of the 70's that captured the spirit of the era. Costner showed us why he became a star.

I only watched it to see Kevin Costner! He's so adorable in this film, but unfortunately it fell short for me. The plot was off. These friends were supposed to go on this life changing adventure, but it turned out that none of them wanted to go. The ending was sad too because the best friend took something away from the other friend.

This is one of those rare movies where the minor characters with the bit parts really make the movie gel. The main characters were good despite some predictable dialogue but the extras make this a movie worth watching. Suzi Amis plays my favorite support character in this movie. She is beautiful and the dream scenes featuring her are great. Makes me wonder why we never saw her again in a major motion picture. The stoner pilot is also an interesting character who reminds me of several people I have known. (His wife is played by Glenne Headly and I dig her hippie character). Check this one out... you'll not be sorry

Great movie. No outrageous stunts but just dumb luck that turned out for the best. It was both exciting and hilarious. A really great cast, all who seemed to work well with each other. Probably the best ending to a movie, goodbye friend.

If you like Kevin Costner films, don't waste your time with this one. It has no redeeming value whatsoever. It makes no sense and goes nowhere.
