You've probably already guessed that the Family Business in this all-star melodrama is the business of crime. Adapted from a novel by Vincent Patrick, the film stars Sean Connery as Jessie McMullen, the patriarch of a family of career criminals, including his son Vito (Dustin Hoffman) and grandson Adam (Matthew Broderick). Vito has gone legit, but college-educated Adam remains loyal to his grandfather. Reluctantly, Vito joins his father and son on a big-time heist involving millions of dollars' worth of test-tube specimens. There's many a slip-up and betrayal before the three generations can find a common ground. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Three excellent actors and a good story. This movie makes a good choice for movie night if you can get past the language. The characters aren't angels, just real crooks played well by Connery, Hoffman and Broderick even if the latter isn't as believable. Broderick just has such an innocent face, which fits the story by adding the unexpected element. However, as the story unfolds, I never buy the why of it. It was just fun watching them all work. Nice cinematography since it served the story and didn't distract. I waited a long time to see this one and it was worth it.

Seems old and dated now but still a good watch.

Good entertainment. Nothing moralistic in these characters but Hoffman does great as the guilt ridden dad and husband.

Very entertaining. Inititially, a film starring Sean Connery, Dustin Hoffman and Matthew Broderick seemed top- heavy. Who would be the lead actor and who would be in support? However, all three are superb actors that can do it all. This was a story about irony. The naieve grandson( Broderick) who idolizes his patriarch grandfather,(Connery) a tough, small-time hoodlum criminal. Dustin Hoffman plays Brodericks father who has decided to go straight, not lead the criminal life like Connery. He desperately wants his son (Broderick) to do the same, to no avail. Invariably they get caught up in a heist. What makes it ironic is... throughout the movie,. Broderick's character wishes his father(Hoffman) was as tough as the grandfather, (Connery). He never realizes until the end that his father (Hoffman) was actually tougher. A good movie, and interesting plot with excellent dramatic acting by all three.

I am a big Sean Connery fan, but it wasnt the best movie I have seen. He cussed way too much in the movie, but Dustin Hoffman and Matthew Broderick were a good fit.

This is an unusual movie in that Dustin Hoffman is playing a tough Italian/Irish born son of Sean Connery. This movie works despite the peculiar casting; this is not a great movie though the story is somewhat interesting. It is worth at least one viewing.
