The Falcon and the Snowman (1985) Reviews

The Falcon and the Snowman (1985)
Member Rating:
John Schlesinger directed this fact-based drama - adapted from Robert Lindsay's bestseller of the same title -- about two Californians, friends since boyhood, who are caught selling government secrets to the Soviet Union. Christopher Boyce (Timothy Hutton) is an all-American boy, studying for the priesthood in a seminary. But Boyce decides to drop out of school, and with the help of his father (Pat Hingle), a FBI agent, he gets a job working for the CIA in a message-routing center. While reading the messages, Boyce is shocked to learn that the CIA is involved in fixing Australian elections. Watching the Watergate hearings on television, he feels an ever-mounting sense of outrage at the arrogance of the U.S. government and decides to do something about it. Deciding to supply the CIA messages to the Russians, he enlists his childhood friend Daulton Lee (Sean Penn) to help him. Lee is to deliver the CIA secrets to a Russian operative (David Suchet) at the Soviet Embassy in Mexico City. But Lee is an unreliable drug dealer, and his sloppy spy trail leads the two old friends into more trouble than they bargained for. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

Timothy Hutton STEALS this movie...he is GREAT ! This movie is a lot deeper than I first expected it to be. Penn does a nice job here, too. It's hard to believe this actually happened, and was a true story - with Hutton's character getting 40-years behind bars, and Penn's getting a life sentence.

This is an excellent Cold War film based on fact. Sean Penn and Timothy Hutton are well cast in the roles of two friends who decide that it is in the best interest of the world to give away military secrets. Highly recommended.

Very slow to develop, fair acting, not a great story, did not like it, too hard to stay interested.

For a true story, this was a pretty good movie. Sean Penn was an idiot. Andy S.

Greed with a sense of rightousness can result in an unhappy ending. This was a true story, and I really enjoyed it. E. George

Liked the falcon motif, a raptor that suddenly strikes unsuspecting small animals. Ease of selling CIA secrets was not surprising but Schlesinger fashioned a stylish and fatalistic tale. Hutton, Penn, Hingle, and especially Suchet were all outstanding.

It was a thrilling ride for such an old vehicle. There are no likable characters here, just differing degrees of baggery, from the clueless rebel to the whiney junky

What an amazing film ... especially when you consider it is a true story. Fantastic acting by everyone. Pretty gripping. Once it was over, w ran to the computer to Google all the names to see where they are now in their lives.

This is an engaging story, quite unpredictable. Excellent acting on the parts of Sean Penn and Timothy Hutton. I found it quite entertaining.
