Escape from L.A. (1996)

Escape from L.A. finds Kurt Russell once again in the role of Snake, which he played in the 1981 film, Escape from New York. Los Angeles has finally had the really big earthquake everyone was afraid of, and what remains is now an island. Because the country's ultra-righteous President-for-Life (Cliff Roberton) wants it that way, all the weirdos and freaks that previously inhabited New York in large numbers, and the rest of the U.S. in smaller concentrations, have been quarantined on the island of L.A. The president has Snake taken from the nice, decent prison he was living in for a special mission in L.A. The president's daughter has joined the resistance movement determined to overthrow his one-man rule, and has stolen his secret "black box" (a doomsday machine) to boot. Snake is given a poison which will kill him in a few hours unless he returns to the president for the antidote. His mission is to recover the black box and kill the president's daughter. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

The best word I can use to describe this film is: hokey. It has some very humorous lines, and provides a unique anti-Utopian portrayal of futuristic Los Angeles. It's definitely worth renting, as long as you watch it with that perspective in mind.

This is one of my personal favorites. It's basically a carbon copy of Escape from New York, but with a lot more cheese and a lot more of snake being a badass. If you're looking for a "good" movie, don't get this. If you like your action over the top and to the point of sheer ridiculousness, then you'll love this.

As a child, I loved Escape From New York so much, I have always been afraid to watch this movie for fear they would tarnish the legacy. This is actually a pretty good movie, albeit a bit more cartoonish and over the top than the original Escape. Even through the enhanced cheese, You get the original Snake Pliskin vibe, bad@ss all the way!. Oddly enough, watcing this in April 2011 weeks after the Japaneese quake, this 1996 film is referencing earthquakes, Tsunami, Muslims and Jihad pre-911..Carpenter is a visionary, indeed! A Cameo by Adrienne Barbeau would have been a nice touch..

Watch it if you liked Escape from New York, though it's not quite as awesome. Still an enjoyable action movie though.

This movie was an EXACT copy of Escape From New York. Not only in plot, but even in the content of the movie. Scenes were taken from EFNY, and then basically just modernized. The only difference I could find with these movies is the setting, and Snake's clothes. All in all, this was an OK movie, and i'd recommend u watch it if your a fan of the series, otherwise, just stick with Escape From New York.

If you've seen Escape From NY there's no point what-so-ever to see this movie. I can't believe they had 15 years to come up with a plot and they ended up writing the EXACT SAME MOVIE, with new characters that played the same role. Kurt Russell's acting was atrocious, completely monotone and emotionless (unlike the original Snake in NY). What a piece of crap. His one lines were completely stale and humorless. The one major difference in LA from NY was that 'Snake' got shot in the leg, and in NY he got stabbed in the leg, WOW, how creative. Hat's off to you John Carpenter and Kurt Russell. Now do me a favor, put down the pens and never write another movie as long as you live. Thanks.

Was this meant to be a spoof on the original movie (Escape From New York)? I love the original movie. This film is so B-Movie cheesy that I kept asking myself if it was a joke. You've got Snake surfing a wave through the middle of L.A. and then jumping from his surf board on to the back of a car??? See the original first and then rent this one for a laugh.

Did you see Escape from New York? It is pretty much the same basic story line, just 15 years later. Almost all of the set up of the whole movie was the same. Brought in by the government, lied to, sent in to find something, captured by bad guys, life on the line, escaped. Same plot, same story, just different city. I give it a half star more than the last one because it was slightly better. Don't waste your time with either of these movies.
