The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949) Reviews

The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949)
Member Rating:
Ichabod and Mr. Toad is a two-part Walt Disney cartoon feature based on a pair of well known stories. The first half of the film is an adaptation of Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, all about gawky 17th century schoolteacher Ichabod Crane and his love for the beautiful Katrina. The girl's vengeful ex-beau Brom Bones decides to scare Ichabod out of Sleepy Hollow by filling the impressionable teacher's brain with stories about the ghostly Headless Horseman--who of course makes an appearance that very night! The second half of Ichabod and Mr. Toad is based on the "Toad of Toad Hall" stories from Kenneth Grahame's The Wind and the Willows. The aristocratic but childish Mr. Toad loves motorcars, but his affection leads him to a jail term when he is accused of stealing an automobile. It's up to Toad's faithful friends to break Toad out of jail and expose the real crooks. One of Disney's better "omnibus" cartoon features, Ichabod and Mr. Toad is enhanced by the narrative skills of Bing Crosby in the Ichabod segment and Basil Rathbone in the Mr. Toad sequence. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Great family entertainment. I'm not as enchanted by "The Wind in the Willows", but it's still cute and fun. Ichabod and the Headless Horseman may be a bit intense for very young kids though. But I highly recommend it for fun family viewing!

Being Crosby narrates the Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Basil Rathbone narrates The Wind in the Willows. What more can be said other then this is classic Disney. No kid or grownup should go through life without having seen the two and, of course, all the other Disney classics such as Dumbo and Cinderella.

One of Disney's oldest and finest movies, Ichabod and Mr. Toad are two great characters, and their stories are just heart touching!

As a kid, I remember seeing this around Halloween and so was the purpose of me renting this around Halloween now. I didn't even watch Mr. Toad, but I enjoyed Ichabod. It's so corny that I couldn't help but laugh. My favorite part is when he is in the forest and graveyard and he is so scared that his mind plays tricks on him. It is funny how that kind of fear is so true for most people. I would recommend kids 5+ being okay to watch this.

Absolutely love this classic. I grew up with it, and I'm so thrilled to be sharing it with my children!

I have been subjected to all of Disney's animated features since 1984 or so. The best, of course, were the classic period from the late 30's through much of the 50's. Most of the recent stuff - particularly the formulaic garbage tah began with Eisner - is barely watchable. Forgive my rant. This is one of my top three. My adult children asked me to rent it. They watched it together and readily admitted the superiority of both eisodes. Of course, it's no "Eternity and Beyond."

This title wasn't as interesting as I remembered it to be. My kids thought it was boring. I thought it was boring. My advice: rent something else.
