Produced and directed by Otto Preminger, Exodus is a 212-minute screen adaptation of the best-selling novel by Leon Uris. The film is concerned with the emergence of Israel as an independent nation in 1947. Its first half focuses on the efforts of 611 holocaust survivors to defy the blockade of the occupying British government and sail to Palestine on the sea vessel Exodus. Paul Newman, a leader of the Hagannah (the Jewish underground), is willing to sacrifice his own life and the lives of the refugees rather than be turned back to war-ravaged Europe, but the British finally relent and allow the Exodus safe passage. Once this victory is assured, 30,000 more Jews, previously interned by the British, flood into the Holy Land. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

For the newer generation that is not familiar with the politics and drama that it took to form the state of Israel, this is an eye opener. But primarily it is great entertainment. Paul Newman is excellent in his roll. He dominates the screen whenever he appears. You won’t be disappointed.

Historically, this film is of interest. It highlights Leon Uris' story, but leaves out many details of the book. However, it is long and rather dated.

We watched with our 15 yoa daughter to give her some idea of the significant events around Israel becoming a nation again. Hollywood version of the excellent Leon Uris book, Exodus. Superb acting. Very sober film. High on my list of excellence. Side note: Now our daughter understands Paul Newman's star power.

Marvelous. Outstanding. Emotionally wrenching. Today's generation needs to see this film to understand what blood, sweat, tears and treasure led to the rebirth of the nation of Israel in the land of their heritage. A timeless film.

Very interesting story of how the Israelies tried to reclaim their homeland. The acting was great! It was sad and uplifting at the same time. The end came way too soon. There is so much more to tell.

Overall, this movie is very good and detailed on a period of history most know very little about. The acting is decent, particularly by the supporting cast. However, for a long movie, it ends rather abruptly. All in all, worth watching!

Exodus is a fantastic film. To start, it stars Paul Newman. You just can't hate Paul Newman. Secondly, the topic is very interesting. I can't think of any other movie about the birth of the state of Israel. The story and screenplay are very well written, and even though it's over three hours long, I was engaged for every second. It seemed to me to carry itself in the same manner and feel of an episode of Combat! The wide-angled shots during some of the scenes remind me of the classic TV show. They left no long gaps between scenes and merged them beautifully. The acting is excellent. The scenery, shot on location in Cyprus and Israel, was truly fantastic. I am a history buff, and I love this movie. Definitely watch it.
