Executive Action (1973) Reviews

Executive Action (1973)

If you think that Oliver Stone invented the "political paranoia" movie, take a glance at Executive Action sometime. Based on Mark Lane's Rush to Judgment, the conspiracy theorist's bible, Executive Action perpetuates the popular urban legend that John F. Kennedy was assassinated at the behest of a right-wing cartel with military and industrial interests. The film further hypothesizes that Lee Harvey Oswald not only didn't pull the trigger, but was also set up as a disposable dupe (this notion wasn't even new in 1973). Burt Lancaster, Robert Ryan and Will Geer play the sinister conspirators. In the film's coda, still photos of 18 witnesses to the assassination are shown, while the accompanying text informs us that all of these people had died between 1963 and 1973. We are further told that the odds against this coincidence are one in a trillion. When Oliver Stone's thematically similar JFK came out in 1991, viewers with long memories were quick to notice the eerie similarities between the Stone film and Executive Action -- right down to choice of camera angles. Hmmm....a conspiracy, perhaps? ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This movie was way ahead of its time . Proably closer to the truth than most Americans dare to think . Mark Lane who tried to represent Oswald at the Warren Commission hearings knew alot about the cover up and the powers tied to to killing of Kennedy . We will never know who pulled the trigger , but this gives us some insight into how abuse of power works and the danger of crossing those who hold such power.

The director has done a great job with this film, it maybe low-budget but its shows how well the white power structure can get away with murder. The framing of Oswald, Route Changes, communications blackout and the death of so many witnesses following the death of Kennedy. If you like JFK then you will love this movie.

This movie is the best JFK conspiracy movie ever. I'm willing to bet that this is probably what really happened. The acting was superb, which really added to the believability and suspense of the movie. I highly recommend this movie.

The definitive movie about JFK conspriacy theories. Must see. People today talk about the theories. See this to know the primary one. Excellent movie with 60's and 70's star power.

We must consider the source. This screenplay was partly written by Mark Lane and was based on his book Rush To Judgment. Mr. Lane has made a nice living finding conspiracy in just about every major event in recent history such as Jones town, the King assassination and Vietnam war crimes in addition to the Kennedy assassination. I have no idea if there was a conspiracy which would be almost impossible to cover up or if Oswald acted alone which is also highly unlikely. That said I do not think this was a very good movie. There are hundreds of books and documentaries and even other fictional films of the events which are much better. I think the movie misses simply because we know the outcome. There is no suspense or drama. It is told in almost a documentary style.Old rich men sitting around in their den slipping whiskey and creating this plot and leaving it up to old Burt Lancaster to recruit and train the killers. There is no personality in this movie so it falls flat.
