Scarlet Sails (1961)
Member Rating:
This "prince charming" tale is adapted from a novel by Alexander Grin about a little girl named Assol, who meets a wizard one day. He tells her that a ship with red sails will arrive -- sometime in the future -- to take her away to a new, happy life with a dashing young prince. She holds onto this prediction in spite of taunts and the ridicule of her neighbors. Meanwhile, the son of a local nobleman grows up to become a sea captain and falls in love with Assol. Sure enough, he decides the only way to win her heart is to unfurl red sails and head into port. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

I was surprised that I enjoyed this movie, I was not expecting much...it is a USSR movie from the 1960s...and I generally don't like the older movies whatsoever, but I enjoyed this story, it is more like a fairytale...I think it would be a great story remade in film today. It is a little like PRINCESS BRIDE. About a little girl who grows up into a beautiful village girl who dreams of a prince (sea captain) to come and rescue her to happily ever after. Of course the prince at times looks like Conan O'brian (not too sexy...ugh...and wears more make up than the girl...) and be prepared for some corny acting at times, and some lameass backdrops on the scenery. But as a chick, I enjoyed this delightful little story...it's worth seeing if you like happy endings. It was good enough to make into DVD, it's better than a lot of the garbage out there being made these days. THEY SHOULD REMAKE THIS MOVIE!!!

I loved this movie! It simplistic and charming fairytale story made it easy to love watching. I was immersed instantly. My husband was loathe to watch it but was very surprised at how caught up he became in the story. I especailly love how it is dubbed over in practiacally every language without loosing any of it's charm or quality. Great "rainy day"- "happy ever after" movie!!
