The Everlasting Secret Family (1987)
Member Rating:
"Everlasting Secret Family" is the name of a sub-rosa homosexual brotherhood in this riveting Australian film. Two of the ESF members are a middle-aged politician (Arthur Dignam) and a boarding-school student (Mark Lee). The younger man begins chafing at the "plaything" status imposed upon him by the older members of ESF. His resentment culminates in a battle of wills between himself and the senator's politically expedient "straight" wife (Heather Mitchell). Dispensing with subtlety, Everlasting Secret Family suggests that, like the so-called mainstream political scene, the gay lifestyle can become a dangerously manipulative power trip in the wrong hands. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The storyline is worth watching. Older men taking on younger men who when they become older take on younger boys. The young boy (mark lee) is good looking and plays the part well. Not as easy flowing movie as it might could have been, but still understanding the plot and the personality of the actors is easy. I watched it a couple of times.

Once you get past the gay love-scene in the beginning, the movie is rather intriguing. The complex relationships within the secret society, the universal desire for perpetual youth, and the use sex to achieve power, all intertwine in a captivating plot. I do not think this could have worked in a heterosexual setting because the overtones of exploitation and misogyny would be even more abhorrent to the general public than the whole gay thing.

Strange tail! I found the story line to be just bizarre enough to be worth watching.

The subject could of been handled better. The movie came off as a cheese cake look at gay men living a dual life. There were some good moments though but not enough of them.

This movie is not that easy to follow, however, it does turn out overall entertaining. The theme to assist you is a society of males who exploit young men, who in turn, exploit other young men when they get older. That gives you the basic theme.

It is hard to describe who is more pathetic, the users or the used. They change places regularly. The movie is hard to follow and understand but one thing is constant, everyone is shallow and out for something. I'm not sorry I watched it but would not recommend it to anyone. The soundtrack tries to imply a deep meaning (think Omen trilogy) but just makes this film more creepy.

This clunker barely deserves to be watched except to see the depiction of gay relationships as they were understood several decades ago. It isn't fun, it isn't interesting, and isn't involving as the characters really don't get fleshed out. Don't bother with this unless you've seen everything else first.

Cardboard performance by aged lead playing a teen. Little can be said without being censured. Comes to a grinding halt with barren resolution for an ending.
