Somewhat based on the life of author Anais Nin, this beautifully photographed erotic outing from director Zalman King (Wild Orchids, 9 1/2 Weeks) tells the story of an aspiring American writer who comes to Paris to hone her craft and ends up exploring the full extent of her sexuality. Initially, Elena's dream was to become a writer of serious literature, but that of course does not happen overnight. In the meantime there are expenses to be met, so when a wealthy and extremely handsome French novelist (whom she has been secretly watching every morning as he rows up and down the Seine) offers her a small fortune to write erotic stories, what can she do but accept the offer? She quickly discovers however, that it's difficult to write of life's sensual pleasures when one has not experienced them and so, sets off to educate herself. Her schooling leads her to a variety of steamy situations and locales with an equally broad assortment of tutors. Typical steamy and erotic Zalman King, with the usual superb photography set in the period of pre-war Paris. An interesting story, lots of flesh and sweat, but all in good taste, that is, if you feel torrid sex is in good taste. Don't watch this if you make love under the covers.

The movie's a bore, and not half as steamy and sexy as they would lead you to believe. The characters and plot were underdeveloped, concentrating too much on the groping and sighing, but with no real emotions emanating during the sex scenes that were meant to be torrid and uninhibited. Instead, the sex was quick and abrupt, and the lead actress had a placid face during the whole movie, which got incredibly annoying. Overall, a very pompous piece that wished to be overly glamorous and artsy fartsy, but failed terribly in what it was meant to do; explore the sexual confines and development of a woman's true identity.

Not especially erotic, and the acting leaves something to be desired. Those who have read Anais Nin's stories, however, will find the film adaptation interesting and many scenes, such as the scene int he opium den, visually gorgeous.

I was unimpressed with this movie. Attractive actors, some nudity and love scenes but all in all it moved slowly and somewhat boring for me. I think it's aimed at teens and 20-somethings. I thought the acting was mediocre. Some of the sets and costuming were good but the hairstyles were not in line with the 30's style of hair dressing. Soft-focus nude scenes sell the whole picture but they do not a story make. Disappointing in that I read the novel the film is based on, and it is better than this.
